This is very disturbing to me since the doc said that the avg loss is about 30 lbs a month. I only consume about 4 to 5 oz during my normal meals, I am eating my protien, and drinking my water as I should.  Any Ideas?

Couple of thoughts here: 1. Remember 30 lbs is an average. That means for everyone over 30, there are people under 30. I was lucky. I lost 44 my first month. That means someone had to be under it. Also, it depends on gender, how much you have to lose, and other wild cards. Nevertheless, think how good that is. 3 weeks. 18 lbs. That is nearly a pound a day. Congrats! 2. Are you doing some exercise daily? You aren't going to be able to run marathons yet, but you have to move to get the pounds off. Today is a beautiful day here in Hampton Roads. Time for a neighborhood walk. Move move move. Also keep in mind that as you exercise you gain muscle mass which helps to burn fat, but it weighs more than fat. I have been bummed when it seemed like the fat wasn't peeling off quickly enough. But as people here have reminded me, look at how your clothes are fitting. That is a much better barometer than the scale. 3. What surgery did you have? Sorry for my ignorance here, but I had RNY and I couldn't get in 5 oz in day. 4. You are only 3 weeks in. There is still a week left in your first month. I have been amazed at how the weight loss comes in waves. You plateau; your body adjusts; then it starts peeling off. 5. I know how depressing it is when you have made this major change to your body and deprived yourself of your main source of comfort in eating and don't see the weight the flying off. You think "Why the heck am I going through this and not getting the benefit of being smaller?" It's ok. You'll make it!

I think you are doing great!!!!!  3 weeks and 18 pounds if you keep this up it will be in the mid twenties for weight loss in a four week time.  You are losing and htat should be great.  Never think that because they say 30 lbs is the norm that you will loose that much.  You might have a month where you loose mire than the average.  Think of it in the success that it is.  That is 18lbs of fat that you are no longer carrying around and 18lbs less closer to a healthier life.   KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

Don't be disappointed! Remember you had lots of gas pumped into you, IV fluids and major surgery. Take measurements and don't obsess about the scale. You are doing great!

Ok...when was the last time you lost 18 pounds in 3 weeks?  You are doing just fine.  Just make sure that you get in your water and your protein...BOTH are VERY important.  How much protein and water are you getting in? But...I have to ask...are you sure that you are eating 5 ounces at a time?  And 5 ounces of what? I hate that docs give that average.  Review my profile and you will see that I did not lose 30 pounds in my 1st month, but consistently lost each week (even when it was irritating because I would lose 2 pounds and then one day go up 1, and the next day go down 1 all week, and then lose again). Also...according to your profile, you have lost 34 pounds between 12/14 - 1/02.  Any weight you lost before your surgery counts and would cause you to slow a bit so that the body could catch up. Or...am I confused by your post?

You have received soem great advice already and it is pretty much right on.  There are a lot of people who get a small stall right at 3 weeks out.  Their bodies freak and start trying to hold on to everything they can.  I was not a fast loser, I would get very frustrated but in the long run, I was a steady loser, didn't really have big stalls, and at 18 months out I had made it to goal.  Definitely make sure you are eating the right things, getting in your protein & water.  I found out that if I was not getting enough water in, especially early out, I lost at a slower rate.  Exercise is definitely key too.  Get that body moving.  You are still healing, it is possible betweent he gas, anesthia, etc. you may have had a small gain right after surgery & your body is still trying to lose that.  Don't be discouraged, keep up with what you are supposed to be doing & it will come off.

Don't worry I am in the same boat and I am seeing things shift and I have a waist again and my face is getting thinner, my feet aren't so fat anymore, my DH feels my shoulder bones, we can actually hug really tight and we fit like puzzle peices.. this a.m. he asked... are you loosing weight in your hands too.. as my fingers look smaller...  Try to focus on other accomplishments other than the scale. I know it's not easy... but really its how you FEEL and LOOK .. the scale is JUST a number... My highest was 291 I weighed in on surgery day at 286 Today I am at 268 So total is - 23 from highest/ 18 from surgery.   I know I haven't been "moving" as much .. but Im focusing on eating slowly first as that has been really hard for me, letting my body heal and then Im going to be a gym addict.. Im dying to get back to running and water aerobics, I have a spin class with my name on it eventually, I have a vengce with the Marine Corps Marathon, My DH and I have a soccer match in our future... Lots of things to look forward to and stay motivated!!

Thanks everyone.  I don't feel as bad now.  To answer some questions that wew asked: - I had the RNY - Maybe it's not 5 ounces per sitting, I know it is very little.  I guess I am going out at lunch time to buy a scale. - I am ingesting about 50-60 grams of carbs aday - between 48-60 oz of water - my food mainly consist of egg beaters, rocatta cheese, apple sause, yogurt, tuna, salmon, mashed taters, soups. Once again, Thanks  You are guys are great!
