Recuperation Question
My sister is having lap band surgery this morning (YAY!). As of yesterday she was planning on working on Wednesday (1/2 day from home and a couple of hours in the office). I know my open RNY was more invasive that lap band, but
IS SHE SMOKIN' OR DREAMING??????
Is lap band usrgery that much of a walk in the park?

Don't know what type of job she has but I would say she is dreaming. The lap banders I know were not allowed to drive until going back to see the doctor, (about 2 weeks). I know my sister had lap band and she was still taking pain meds two weeks out. I sure hope you sister does well and let us know if she went back to work that soon. Crystal
Thanks, Crystal. Her dr said she could drive as soon as she's off pain meds. Once I was released from the hospital I took no pain meds at all, but I still didn't feel like I could work.
She's comparing the WLS to her gall bladder surgery a couple of years ago. She had the operation (outpatient) lap on a Thursday and felt ready for work by Saturday.

Hi there, I've not had lap band but wanted to wish your sis the best. I would suggest she talk with her doc before making work decisions. All best....

Well finally, something I can speak about that I actually have knowledge of...LOL.
Ummm....no way!!! Her innards are gonna be moved about, rearranged, etc., so they'll need time to settle down. She'll still be under general anesthesia & we ALL know what THAT'S like getting over. Bloating from air in her belly will make it uncomfortable. The little incisions, themselves, need time to heal. So no, I don't see her going anywhere for at least a week. Truly, her best bet is to ask her doctor, but being a lapbander myself, I say no way. Unless, of course, she's like the cheerleader on Heros where she heals instantly. Probably not, huh? LOL
A lot depends on the kind of work she does, and whether or not she has told her co-workers about her surgery. Any smart boss would require a letter from the surgeon saying she could go back to work. If *all* she does is answer the phone and transfer calls, then maybe an hour or 2 would be manageable. (Not to say that is a menial job or anything, just physically non-demanding.) If she has to lift ANY thing (even a file) or move around at ALL -- then no, don't count on it.
Oh, and while they may be PLANNING to do this lap, there are situations that present themselves during the surgery itself that requires they open up the patient.
I know, a lot of if's -- personally, I would take the time off and focus on healing.
