Should Full Liquids Fill me up?

I'm wondering if anyone ever gets full on full liquids?  Should I get feelings of fullness even if sipping slowly?  I had a skim latte.   After about 4 or 5 ounces of it, I got a pinchy feeling on my side.  If I took another sip, I got the pinchy feeling again.  I stopped sipping because I'm SO afraid of popping my staples!  (silly I know, but still a fear!)    I wouldn't have imagined that full liquids would make me feel full.... most have gone down similarly to other clearer fluids.  I can't do thick liquids like an Atkins shake. I have to water it way down.  Could this be it? Milk is too "thick"?  I don't mind feeling full on liquids, but these are the things they don't really tell you. My doc(Not the surgeon who did my surgery- his fellow)  couldn't find the paperwork saying how large my pouch was so I am operating on the assumption that its about the size of a medicine cup, or one of those small dixie cups for the bathroom!

Hi Dawn, Your pouch is probably about the size of an egg right now and for a short time after surgery it is possible to feel full on liquids. After a while you will not feel as full so make the most of it right now lol! In the beginning you will be amazed at how little you can drink or eat but it does not last forever so enjoy it!  You can't stretch your pouch on liquids right now so don't worry about that..... The pinchy feeling is the one telling you to stop, you are full - if you continue you will feel ill.... so listen to your body because you will indeed suffer if you overeat on solids in the beginning ......... We mostly all went through it Dawn so just hang in there and ask any questions here - I am sure you wil get lots of advice! Jackie

Thank you Jackie, I did stop when I felt the pinchy feeling.  I have lurked on these boards for a long while and don't want to experience any of those abbreviations I see.   I am afraid of not getting enough liquids. It seems to happen most in the evenings.  I'll have something in the evening and be stopped up for most of the night, and not finish my liquids for the day.  This is why I haven't even moved to pureed foods yet!    I'll just do better tomorrow with thinner liquids earlier in the day since this seems to be a little bit of a pattern right now.   The learning curve of this whole thing certainly is interesting if nothing else!   Thank you for your help and reassurance, this board is the BEST.

I truly understand your fears Dawn. If you try to get as much liquid in as possible during the day you can afford to drink a bit less in the evenings but try not to go more than 90 minutes without liquids - in the beginning - because if you are only doing liquids right now that is a long time for your body to go without fluid...... It is interesting in the beginning and try not to panic too much - I did not even have to do just liquids with my surgery,  (although now all patients of Dr Halmi have to for a few weeks) just pureed food and liquids and I could not even eat a small 1/4 cup serving without being completely full - and I wondered how I was going to fit in my liquid, protein and vitamins etc - it did seem overwhelming in the beginning..... It does become second nature after a while.... You are doing great!! PM me anytime if you need advice....... Jackie

Good am Dawn, Jackie's responses are GREAT! It's definitely trial and error in the beginning. Your body will talk to you and tell you "when" you just have to listen. Wishing you the best!

Jackie has given you excellent feedback - isn't she great?!?! In the beginning, I could not get all of my liquids in each day beause I got full so fast. As long as you try to take even a few sips every 90 minutes or so, you will be fine. The learning curve is indeed steep, even if it is interesting. And as much as we all experience most of the same things, each individual is different, so make sure you listen to your body!

Hey Dawn, I too felt very full from liquids right after surgery.  Like Jackie said - read your body's way of talking to you...the pinchy feeling means full.  This is espeically helpful when you get to solids!  Try your best to get in the fluids, because you don't want to be dehydrated, but don't make yourself uncomfortable.  I was SOOOO thirsty after sugery through the first and second month.  It was all i could do, to just want to go gulp gulp gulp, but DON'T do that.  Ugg.  Taking in too much at once leaves you feeling really yucky.
