Traveling to Hawaii...any ideas?

We are going to Hawaii April 6.  I am a little nervous.  This is the first major trip I will be taking since I have my surgery In October.  I have already checked about taking my protein shakes on the plane, but am worried about keeping on my eating schedule.  The second part of our flight is over 8 hours.  When I checked on the airlines website, they have mostly cold cut sandwiches.  Anyone have any ideas on what would be good to eat?  I am also worried about the time change.  Will this affect my eating as well?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I am so jealous!  I went to hawaii for three weeks last year and i absolutely LOVE it.  I can't wait to go back. As far as eating on the flight, they actually had pretty healthy food on mine, but what you could also do is get something at the airport that is cold and travel friendly, you can take food and drink on the flight as long as it is purchased AT the airport past the customs, or whatever they call them now.  I used my portable DVD player bag as a purse for my flight so i could stuff stuff in there and still have movies to watch.  As far as the time change...it's CRAZY!  I got sick the first two days we were there because of the change, but there is really no reason why you can't stay on your schedule.  What island are you going to?  I can give you a whole list of must do thing if you want!  We have friends out there (military) so we got a lot of the insider info on Oahu.  You will have a GREAT time! oh the best luau...paradise cove, the Polynesian cultural Center is a MUST do,  the sea life one...SO not worth the money.  You can see Sea life closer up doing the dolphin encounters or just going to the north shore near turtle bay and the sea turtles come up twice a day.  WEAR A TON OF SUNBLOCK!  the sun is SO different there, if you go snorkeling at Hunama Bay you will need to reapply often because the sun reflection on the water makes it even worse!  another great place to snorkel is Sharks Cove (there won't be sharks...just the name! lol)  I could talk about hawaii forever so please any questions just ask!!!

I went to Europe last month. I'd recommend getting a letter from your doctor saying that your vitamins and protein are medically necessary. Also, eat when you can in the airport and as was said, you can brink drinks and food on the plane as long as you buy them after you clear security. I got a product called Protein to Go (at GNC) that was protein powder and simply added it to bottled water I got on the plane for my protein and I took a day's supply of my vitamins on board. It may be difficult to deal with the protein and vitamins but it sure is nicer to fit in the seats. I also did the snorkeling in Hunama BAy and have to say it is one of the great experiences in my life. Get up early and go! You'll be up before sunrise because of the 5 hour time change anyway!

Hey Robin, I suggest taking several protein bars on the airplane. Perhaps some fruit also, although the airline will probably have fruit for you. Are you the Robin I sat next to at the Staple Club support group a couple of months ago? Good to see you. Have a great trip!! Joe

Aloha !  I cannot add anything else that people have already told you. However, you cannot take fruit into Hawaii . I It being the islands, and they import most of their foods, they are leary of bugs. So no friut ... but ..when you get there .. and are out and about ..  You must try a Monapua (sp) these are little donut like eats with seasoned pork in them .  Also .. explore the fish of Hawaii .  Ahi - Yellow Tuna  Aku - Skipjack Tuna  MahiMahi - sweet white fish .  I lived in Hawaii for 6 years and fell in love with the place . My son was born there .. we are planning a trip this year as well to take him back to see the Army Hospital were he was born.  Remember to stay hydrated on the plane ...  and most all  Enoy every minute .  Nat

You pretty much got great advice from everyone.  I just wanted to add that I do find it hard to stay on schedule when I am on vacation.  Not so much my eating schedule as with my fluids.  I usually end up not getting in enough fluids when I am traveling & have to really make an effort to pu****

I love Hawaii - we went there for 3 weeks for our honeymoon and went to three different islands - it was fun - I didn't want to come home!! For the plane - you can tell them that you are on a special diet (if you do so in advance - the one they understand the best is a diabetic diet)  and they will give you a meal that is fairly suitable for you. Drink LOTS of water - they can supply it but you can also take your own on board if you buy it at the airport.... it is very important to stay hydrated. It is easy to find good food in Hawaii too -  lots of bbq stuff and fresh fruit and a ton of great things to do. I loved the glass submarine and going to the bottom of the ocean and seeing all the sea life -and the Lauas are fun too.... Have a great time! Jackie

You all are awesome.  What support I get from here.  Joe, yep that is me.  Good to see you also.  I did get notes from both my PCP & surgeon.  We are going to be at the JW Marriott on Ohau.  I plan on doing so much and keeping busy, but to also make time for myself and take long walks on the beach.  I promise to post some pictures when I get back.  Thank you everyone for your suggestions.  I do not travel much, so this was a big help.  I really like this forum.  I will keep everyone posted.  Hugs to all.
