Hi all, Has anyone had surgery in Mexico, and if so, how much trouble was it to find a doctor who would follow up with? Thanks.

I have known one person who did this for lapband - and she had to go back to Mexico for follow up because no-one here would take her - she even had a reaction to the lapband and had to go back to Mexico to have it removed as no-one here again would touch it because of liability issues.  In my opinion, it can be risky - but is also can be done..... I had my open RNY in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico with Dr Aguirre almost five years ago.  I did have to stay in Mexico for nine days after my surgery until my drain tubes came out, but wouldn't have wanted to travel 20 hours on a plane with those anyway.  I can't say enough good things about my experience in going there.  But, once you leave there, you are on your own, he doesn't normally do any follow up.  I did go back and see Dr Aguirre one time a year later when I took my son to Mexico for dental work.  I lived in Alaska at the time, and had a PA that followed me after my surgery, which worked out very well.  Since moving to VA, I am following up with my annual visits with Dr Hutcher's office here in Richmond.  I know that Dr Halmi in Woodbridge will also follow patients who had their surgery elsewhere.  Let me know if I can help in any way.  Best wishes on your journey! My PCP has been very cooperative throughout my journey getting the DS in Mexico. Even though she had never heard about it before, she was willing to learn and orders all the labs that I request.  Other than getting a band that would require fills/unfills, I'm sure she'd be willing to cooperate with you, too. Pm me if you'd like her name and number. If you DO get the band, I would recommend Dr. Rumbaut in Monterray. He partners with surgeons in the US and will find a doctor for your fills. Not that I'd recommend the band, but he also has an excellent reputation as does the hospital he uses.
