regarding protein drinks & shakes

My surgery is this month and I have been trying different foods for the different stages so that I have some things that  I like before I am faced with having to eat them.  Now I am on to trying to find a protein.  I am not a big drinker of different things, except Sprite & Coke Zero and water and I have a horrible gag reflex.  So a friend of mine suggested a few things and I thought I'd ask.  She mentioned Ensure, which is ok for protein I think, but high in sugar.  Bad for me, since I'm already a diabetic.  Also mentioned was Boost, which is good in protein and has a glucose control and finally, Glucerna.  If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts about these as if they could be used as protein drinks or a source of protein after surgery during the early or even later stages.  I would appreciate all input.  Thanks & hugs, Theresa

I'm not 100% sure, but you'll want to check to see what KIND of protein those drinks are. We are supposed to have Whey protein...(at least according to my surgeon).  Check at the vitamin shoppe...they have a lot of variety of protein drinks/powders and such. My favorite from there or Safeway is Muscle Milk (a tad high in fat though). Best protein I've found though is Unjury...which can only be ordered via the web at www.unjury.com. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice.  I ordered samples of it so maybe I will like it.  Didn't realize until I started coming to this web site just how unpleasant protein shakes could be.  Again, thanks. Hugs, Theresa

Try this site as well :  www.bumblebeecottage.net  Look at the AcheivOne. And the protein bullets,  Christina is right .We should be making Whey protein concentrate and Whey protein isolates our protein focus. They carry the 21 amino acids that we need .  You are going to have to try a few before you find the one you like . I have gone from drinking Nectar products to my A1. And I love it .  Best wishes to you ,  TInk

Hey Tink...  I just went to the web site to see if I could order samples and as soon as the page loaded, it said they were all out of stock of AcheivOne.  Ugh...  Just my luck.  I did the bariatriceating.com site and they have Vanilla nut and Hazlenut but are out of stock of the Mocha Java & Cappucino until more is manufactured and shipped in late April.  I did order samples of Unjury to try them.  Thanks for your advice. Hugs, Theresa

Unjury is good as well . But is water based . Or atleast the ones I had you had to mix . I mixed protien for 3 years ... and I love the RTG proteins .  I wished you lived closer . I would bring you samples to try .  The Vanilla Nut is good , but I am not fond of the hazelnut .  I hope you find something you like .  Best wishes,  Nat

a "bullet" is a 3oz vial of protein.  It has the consistancy of jello before it molds, kinda thick, but gives you teh most bang for your buck and least amount of fluid.  There are several brands out there.  Look at the one Nat suggested in this thread and you can look for IDS New Whey Bullets and www.profect.com for their bullet.  Vitamin Shoppe and GNC both sell individuals in their fridge section to try the flavors.
