She whomped me again!!! We got wet but it was fun. Jill actually finished ahead of me by a second or two as she did in the Shamrock 8K in Va Bch MAr 15.   I am not sure how we wound up with the same time.

I'm not trying to start anything here, but it is clear that next time you have to trip her.

HHhhheeeeyyyyyy............. NOT nice - haha! But....he's got to catch me ot trip me BUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Ready for the Chesapeake Bay 10K?????  This was a great practice run for me.  I made some mistakes in this run, and I did some things that I like and will do again. We should chat to see where we want to meet.  I may just ride my bike there to avoid the parking crowds and plus it would be a great warm up.  So, let me know!

Ok...By the time I drove home, got the girls from storage, picked up dinner...I was toast! HAHA. We woke up to an overcast sky, but had hopes of it staying overcast insead of rain.... But, those hopes were dashed as soon as we got into position to run out.  There were SO many people that I was pleasantly surprised that I found Joe in the crowd.  So, as we stood there waiting for our turn, getting reved up...it starts to rain.  Not sprinkle, but RAIN - UGH!!!!!  It rained a good 15 - 20 minutes.  Fortunately, my shoes weren't wet, so I was fine and raring to go. At 9:34, we were told to take off......and off we did.  My Ipod didn't start - ACK!  So, my first few seconds were messing with that...ok...now I'm getting into the groove..... As soon as I hit mile 1, it starts to rain again...UGH!  But, it's not too bad.....I can deal with it.  Joe was just behind me, but I wasn't sure where as I cannot see him.  But, I know it's not too far..... About mile 1.5, Joe passes me and takes off.  WOW!  Impressive.....he's just in the zone and is doing it!  Go, Joe, Go! I see my son around mile 2.  It was a great feeling seeing him on the sidelines cheering me on....He took my picture - it's not very good, but he did that for me. About the 3 mile mark, my Ipod tells me that I am half way there - YEAH!  The 2nd half is ALWAYS easier than the 1st half, because that's when you realize that you actually feel good.  But, it's pouring it's rear off now....UGH!  Keep on going...... About mile 4, I see Joe.....I pass Joe......I step in a puddle and have wet feet - ACK! About mile 5, the sun is starting to come out...the crowds are overwhelming.....it's AWESOME the support we have received, I've stepped in 3 more puddles...... Crossing the finish line is emotional.   Another milestone................... Now....find the bathroom...... I didn't meet my personal record goal of under 63 minutes...but that's ok.  I just wanted to finish and have fun....which I did......

Hey Jackie-- I didn't run this one. Both my sons had soccer matches yesterday and there was no way I could get back here from Richmond in time, so I had to take a pass. Jill and I are running a 10k here in Norfolk later this month, so we'll update that.

Wow!  Congratulations guys!  I'm so impressed with how dedicated you are to this - and it shows in your results.  I hope you're taking a day off to celebrate today :) (in the rain again - yuck!) Sarah

Thanks for the comments and support guys.   Blair,..I'd have to be able to catch Jill to trip her..... But thanks for the idea!!   Thanks for the recap Jill. Jackie, just don't start too far and/or too fast when you get the green like.  Good gains come with increase over time.  It took me from Sep 06 to get to where I am, and a 6 week layoff with the flu the last two week of Jan 08 thru hitting the road on Mar 1 08,..really set me back so you have to do it regularly to progress. Thaks again everyone.  It was fun.  I had a really good time and am glad I found Jill so I had a buddy.  It is so much more fun when you have a friend to share it with. Jill took off at the start and I decided I was determined to do my pace and not get caughtup in startting too fast and not be able to finish strong.  Idi let some new reading and technology undercut my effort however.  I used an equation I discover aouut the caffinated runner and tried to applyt it because I am realtive certain I ranaa training run of 6.3 on the Tuesday before the race, at lunch at work, in 57-60 minutes (my watch was missing so I depended on a variety of wall clocks). So Iwas really pysched abot doing this with theype of the crowd and the event, most tend to go faster than during training. So....I had my regular morning drug regime and a OJ, egg white  and protein powder breakfast at 6 a.m. pre-race.  I did my Absorbine Jr and Icy Hot leg rub-down.  I packed up and left.  I had a protein bar and a bottle water during the 30 min drive to Richmond.  Walked the mile to the meeting area and there started my new magic performance solution (80mg of caffine) 2 (instead of 1) energy drink powder in my ottle water 60-90 minutes before the workout after at least 4 to 6 days with no caffine.   Ifelt good and stretching and taking in the sights and getting hyped.  After giving up on finding Jill I started for my wave and on the wave, Jill saw mw and yeeled out and we were able to hang together to start.  We worked our way to the center of the road for a good start without having to dodge alot of walkers.  About 3 minutes before the start, I started hurting in the shoulders and thighs, then I started with a head-ache and litle dizziness.  At first I just wrote it off as nerves, then started realizing, it was the caffine buzz like I hadn't had since trying one of those 5 hr no caffine drinks.    So we started and I had my usual achy body first mile but I pressed on. Jill took off like a machine.  I though she was really gonna kick my butt today but then she seemed to slow as I thought I was warming into my comfort pace (which I wanted to push a bit today to break my PR goal of 60 minutes or less).  I decide to run my race and hope for the best.  Chasing her at Shamrock March 15 helped my time, so I though maybe I could return the favor and we'd visit at the finish. After the 2 mi marker my breathing started becomg labored again like it did at the Shamrock and I started to worry but was determined to keep going.  I got some Powerade at the 2 mi water station and it hit like lead.  I tried it again at the 3.1 water station but slowed to a aArmy marching pace to see if swallowing felt better.  I truly believe the caffine was a OD and had my heart pounding.  After a short way I got back to jogging so not ruin my effort so far. I skip fluids at 4 mi and pour a cup of water over my head at the 5 mi station which amused the volunteers, as it had been raining to that point and we were pretty wet already,...but I'm a ham that way. Somewhere after 4 mi and coming up on the 5 mi marker I realized Jill was in front of me. I didn't notice her pass me.  I tried to catch-up but could never get much closer than 10-20 yds.  I worked to kick the last 3-4 blocks or at least pick-up the pace more without dying befoer reaching the finish.  So did Jill.  I though she crossed ahead of me but lost eye contact the last 100 yards and after being herded into the finishing corral and having my shoe chip removed, I surrendered in trying to find JIll and her son.  It was wall to wall and elbow to elbow people.  So I got a bittle wate, banana, and bagle and worked on that as I walked back to my car where I left my cell phone.  I called and we compared note and locations and said our goodbyes and I came home to delver 324 quarts of brunswick stew with a fundraiser I was working this weekend too.  Between my wife and I , we delivered 271 and have the other 53 to keep us entertained Sunday afternoon. Other than that,..it is a day of rest.  And a happy one.
