I'm sure I should call my dr. about this but I need to know if this is a problem with anyone else. I am on a very popular  anti-depresent, and since my RNY in 2004, I have noticed that I have become more and more anti social, reluctant to go anywhere  or get dressed, take care of myself.  I feel like my med. is no longer effective. Is it true that med are not absorbed with an RNY bypass?  I read it somewhere on a board weeks ago. It got me to thinking. I welcome your thoughts and opinions. priscilla

Good pm Priscilla, Please call your doctor ASAP. Its VERY true that certain meds cannot/are not absorbed as well as before RNY. I encourage you to talk with your doc ASAP! Mine changed dramatically. All best!

Hi kitty kat, thanks for your advice. I need to start feeling better, my DH is scratching his head, not knowing what to do for me. I don't want to put him thru a lot of worry. I'll call my doc.

After RNY you have about a 60% absorbtion rate after 18-24 months.  The healing month before than, the absorbtion is even less.  So if the pill is time -release, it is useless to you.  it it is a capsule, it is less able to be absorbed than a pill.  Test:  drop a pill in a lukewarm/room temperature glass of water.  Wait 20 min and see whats happened.  It is dissolved you are getting some benefits, if no, you aren't. Good luck and make sure your doc knows about your new plumbing and malabsorption issue.

Hi Joe, thanks for the info. Will certainly try it tonight.  My doc already knows, but maybe he's not up on the RNY procedure. In any case, I will followup on your suggestion. Thanks so much. Priscilla

Great question and answers. I didn't even think of this for my own issues of late. I'll be calling my shrink for a new appt.  Thank you all!

Hi Jen, I'm happy I posted my concern. Maybe others are wondering about the same issue.

It may have something to do with a hormonal change too??  I'm also on an anti-depressant and brought your very same concern to my doctor before surgery.   In my logical thinking I thought I would need MORE of the drug, but he ended up telling me that he has found the opposite with RNY patients.  That as you lose the weight less of the drug is needed (just the same way that a 125lb person wouldn't be on the same dosage as me at my highest of 369lbs).  Since surgery I've had my dosage reduced by 50mg per day and do not see any ill effects from it.  Best of luck!

Hi Lauren, its certainly possible it could be a hormonal change. I'm still waiting for my dr. to call me back. I checked with my pharmacy, and they don't have what I need in liquid or gel.  I haven't taken any for 2 days , and I feel fine.   Maybe I can do without them.   I am still going to followup with dr. again Mon. if he doesn't call me. Thanks for your input. Priscilla

Don't stop taking your meds!!  Keep it up until the doctor gives you the say so.  It's the best thing for you!  :)  I hope you get that callback very soon.  It can be so frustrating playing the waiting game!
