Do you miss food?

Maybe I'm having pre surgery jitters. I start my pre-op diet on Monday and then surgery in 2 weeks. These last few days I'm having these thoughts of never having certain foods again. I want to know if you miss the foods you shouldn't have? Or does that feeling subside as time goes by? Thanks, Penny

Hi Penny, The only food I miss being able to eat is bread! No matter what, I just cant eat it in any way, shape or form. It's not like I was a big bread eater before, but dang it I miss being able to have a piece of toast. I had the same concerns before surgery. I found that as the weight came off and I became healthier it was easier to put protein in my mouth first. Usually I was/am too full to have much of anything else so my snack is fruit or veggies.

Good am Penny, NOPE! I don't miss food. I use it for fuel and energy mainly! Honestly, we're limited in the types of "bad" foods we can eat which is a good thing. There are SO many GREAT foods that aren't high in carbs, fat, sugar, fried etc. The feeling of 'missing' foods will subside once you realize you CAN have a wide variety of them. I look at it from this perspective do I miss being obese? Do I miss sitting on the couch and never leaving the house? Do I miss canceling dinner or plans or going places because I just don't have the energy? Do I miss waiting for a table because I cannot fit in a booth? DO *I* miss food? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to all those questions and then a tremendous amount more. I eat, I eat good things and I LOVE food still. You WILL have choices and you WILL make great ones. Not every day will you be "perfect" at this journey but you will be given the tips, tricks and tools and of course you have US! All best!

Penny I agree with Kat - -I do not really miss any food - I do not eat bread, pasta or rice but I don't mss them either..... After surgery you can't eat like before and if you make it a lifestyle change you will not miss food - it is not like you can never eat it again........ I know many people mourn the loss of food just after surgery but after a while the feeling subsides and you look and feel healthier and certainly do not want to jeopardize that..... just keep reminding yourself why you had this surgery and stay away from the unhealthy junk foods - they are no longer our friend! Penny- I find that I *can* eat just about anything, but sometimes there are consequences that make it not worth it. What I find I miss about food is what got me in the situation I as in to begin with...being able to use food as a comfort....and that's not such a bad thing that I can't do that anymore.  Having some pre-surgery jitters is perfectly normal...I went through the same kinds of thoughts.

Since i'm not even 3 weeks out from surgery yet, i MISS food!  but, my body is telling me to use it just for energy and fuel, and my head is catching up (slowly).  I wish you all the luck in the world with your surgery, you will do great! - Lys

Not to worry, your mind will catch up with your new pouch!  For me, I pretty much got over the hump during the two week pre-op liquid diet.  That was life altering for me.  Since then, I'm just not hungry and fill up so fast that I'm very satisfied by what I do eat.

Hi Penny, you are almost there girl!! I am so excited for you!!!  I'll be there for you and would of course like to visit you in the hospital.  I usually visit the second day if that is okay with you.   As to your question, nope I don't miss anything I find I am eating to be healthy still.  The results are so awesome you feel so good.   You will have to pinch yourself to believe it.  Give me a call if you need anything or have any last minute questions.  Your in good hands with Dr. Lucktong!!!
