Help needed - big confession
I’m here for you! Keep strong and you will find the answer.
I think a visit to psychiatrist would benefit you. They are the most versed on the current medications out there and what best medicine may help the chemical imbalance you have right now. I’m a huge advocate for medicine when needed. Personally, I have been seen by someone for 15 years or so, and medicated for about 10 of them. It’s just a part of my life now, and I’m thankful that I am better able to handle life with the meds and therapy I get. There are definatley times when life with throw you a curve ball and you will have situational depression. Or maybe you have always had depression, but were never overwhelmed enough for it to affect you the way it is right now. I’m not going to preach therapy to you, as a psychology grad you well know the pro & cons, so if it’s not for you, it’s not for you. Would you consider some self guided therapy? When I was going through a period of anger and mental anguish my therapist suggested guided meditation CD’s from Belleruth Naparstek. I found her online and ordered the “Anger and Forgiveness” and “Relaxation & Wellness”. I hate to admit, I have still not listened but my therapist assured me her guided meditations were top notch, so I’ll pass along that referral even though I haven’t listened yet.
I also think searching deeper into faith may be a help for you. I struggle back and forth on my faith, as this part of my life has changed greatly in the last year, but overall, I find it HUGELY comforting to believe in a higher power and seek guidance in some way shape or form. Everyone practices their faith differently and you may been on a long road to finding the best church for you, but even if you get a devotional book of passages or maybe a devotional bible to study at home would be a help while you are trying to find a church.
A side note on the smoking. If you talk to a doctor, see if they will discuss Wellbutrin with you. Not only is it a very effective anti-depressant it is also used as a cessation medication for smoking. Who knows, maybe you could kill two birds with one stone. It’s worth at least getting some information about it at least.
I’m really glad you were brave enough to post your need for help. There are many of us out there who battle depression and you are NOT alone. Never feel that way. I’m here to chat or see you if you ever need a friend. I too have no one to talk to sometimes. Not to make light, but I regularly joke that I have to pay someone to listen to my bs because no one else will (aka my going to a therapist). But seriously, I’ve been seeing her now for 10 years this year and she is a huge part of my success.
BIG HUGS and lots of strength coming your way!
