Courtney, You are an awesome person and we all love you and care for you. I really suggest seeing your PCP. He/she can make a diagnosis and put you on meds, if necessary. I will send you a PM. Joe

Thanks Joe.  Definitely thinking that should be a priority right now.  I am chicken and having to work myself up to it.

Wow...everyone's so awesome here!...lol. Court, you're such a sweet, giving person and I feel your pain. I won't share my story -it's long and probably boring, but suffice it to  say that I've been there.  I've tried this med and that med for what seems like the last 15 years.  I haven't taken anything for the last 5 years or so. Prescriptions helped for a little while, but not all that much for me. For many people though, it makes a world of difference - even if it's just  temporary, so it might be helpful for you.     When it comes to a mental health Dr., I don't feel like they have the time to listen to all of what I'm  feeling or not feeling or whatever. I feel like I'm being judged.  They don't know me...lol. I  can't bare my soul to a stranger - whether I'm paying them or not....lol. That's just me.  Therapy helps many people, too, right?  Clinical depression does need to be looked at and don't be ashamed - it's a common thing.  When it comes to faith, I've been down a not-so-good  road that way, as well. I've learned that it doesn't have much to do with being in a church, per se, ( I call it 'riding the pew'...lol.) but what YOU believe in and what YOU believe to be true is what  you can lean on for support. Whether it be prayer or meditation or music...  With as much encouragement that you get from 'people', you have to encourage yourself, as well, which is where those books come in.  You can learn so much. Of course, it helps to try to surround yourself with positive, genuine people who care about you and want to help you to be an overcomer.  Stay away from folks that want to hinder or think it's all  about them...lol. I love the books that Oprah reccommends, too.  They are positive for women.  Warm fuzzy kinda books.  Self improvement. Sometimes, I'll go to Barnes and Noble on a rainy day and just pick out some self-improvement books and  thumb through them for pointers.... For me - I go to the shore.  It's healing for me.   Don't fret, the answers are there for you.  It's just a matter of finding what works for you. You are awesome and have so much to offer... I've read many of your posts that are just caring and encouraging to others... (((Court))) xo J

I’m here for you! Keep strong and you will find the answer.

I think a visit to psychiatrist would benefit you. They are the most versed on the current medications out there and what best medicine may help the chemical imbalance you have right now. I’m a huge advocate for medicine when needed. Personally, I have been seen by someone for 15 years or so, and medicated for about 10 of them. It’s just a part of my life now, and I’m thankful that I am better able to handle life with the meds and therapy I get. There are definatley times when life with throw you a curve ball and you will have situational depression. Or maybe you have always had depression, but were never overwhelmed enough for it to affect you the way it is right now. I’m not going to preach therapy to you, as a psychology grad you well know the pro & cons, so if it’s not for you, it’s not for you. Would you consider some self guided therapy? When I was going through a period of anger and mental anguish my therapist suggested guided meditation CD’s from Belleruth Naparstek. I found her online and ordered the “Anger and Forgiveness” and “Relaxation & Wellness”. I hate to admit, I have still not listened but my therapist assured me her guided meditations were top notch, so I’ll pass along that referral even though I haven’t listened yet.

I also think searching deeper into faith may be a help for you. I struggle back and forth on my faith, as this part of my life has changed greatly in the last year, but overall, I find it HUGELY comforting to believe in a higher power and seek guidance in some way shape or form. Everyone practices their faith differently and you may been on a long road to finding the best church for you, but even if you get a devotional book of passages or maybe a devotional bible to study at home would be a help while you are trying to find a church.

A side note on the smoking. If you talk to a doctor, see if they will discuss Wellbutrin with you. Not only is it a very effective anti-depressant it is also used as a cessation medication for smoking. Who knows, maybe you could kill two birds with one stone. It’s worth at least getting some information about it at least.

I’m really glad you were brave enough to post your need for help. There are many of us out there who battle depression and you are NOT alone. Never feel that way. I’m here to chat or see you if you ever need a friend. I too have no one to talk to sometimes. Not to make light, but I regularly joke that I have to pay someone to listen to my bs because no one else will (aka my going to a therapist). But seriously, I’ve been seeing her now for 10 years this year and she is a huge part of my success.

BIG HUGS and lots of strength coming your way!

Lauren

Thanks Lauren.  I didnt think about the wellbutrin angle.  You may be on to something there.  It so helps to have you all here for me.  Definitely a reassurance that I do have at least one place to belong.

Well Sweetie, I hope you find the answers that you're looking for.  While I don't have any info or advice on depression I can say that you need to put yourself first.  If you're taking care of you then everything else will fall in line!  I'll be thinking of you!

Be more concerned about your character than about your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think of you.
