Thanks for your advice.  After reading Lauren's post, once I am able to eat more foods, I will choose options like cheese and milk.  Always knowing that protein shakes are going to be something I have to consume. Again, thanks for the advice.

Once you are able to eat more it will make a difference.  The protein drinks are important too, especially early out because we don't absorb everything.  Now I personally do not still drink protein shakes.  I haven't since I hit one year out.  But my nutritionist & doctors office strive to teach us how to work the protein through our foods into our lives so that we have the choice of not doing the drinks if we want.  I have actually been considering going back to one shake a day as I have noticed some hunger/cravings recently that I had not been having.  I would suggest going on line & getting some samples of different protein powders you think you may like & giving them a try to see if there are a few you can work into your diet in order to get what you need.  I personally just drank the same thing 2 times a day for a year.  Others really need a variety.

Theresa, the flavored protein drinks will count towards your water intake as well since you are adding the water to them.  That's how I did it.  I also did the profect as Penny said since it was only 3 ounces.

where do you find these and do they have an unflavored type?

For unflavored protein I recommend Unjury.  Also, like Courtney said, early on it is hard to get enough protein, and you certainly want to strive to get the amount your Doc/Nut set for you. However, if you are unable to do that for the first couple weeks just do the best you can and don't fret about it. You are doing great. Congratulations. Joe

Thanks for the advice and the well wishes.  My doctor has set 50 - 60 grams of protein to take in.  It's not an unreal amount.  I am just wanting something different.  Do these unflavored proteins really have NO flavor?  That is another thing I have been wondering.

Theresa, Unjury unflavored really is unflavored. It is a white powder and will change the consistency of the product you put it in. I typically use it with 8 oz NF milk and a package of WonderSlim strawberry protein shake mix. This provides 40 grams of protein in a very tasty shake. The Unjury not only adds protein, but also adds to the "shake" consistency. Joe

Joe, thanks so much.  I have samples coming so hopefully this will eliminate my dilemna early.  And I may even copy your recipe.  Thanks again. Hugs

I had surgey in 1999 and I went to GNC and they had a protein powder (WHEY)  that had 50 grams of protein to a scoop.  I used ice and yogurt with it and made a shake.

There ARE protein powders that mix well in hot liquids.  Personally I get mine from www.mydietshopz.com They have a whole section of hot stuff -- meaning prot powders that are DESIGNED to mix well into hot liquids.  I use the hot cocoa variety in my morning latte. They have soups as well as sloppy joe type things and mac n cheese. Speaking of cheese, try adding some to those mashed potatoes.  The more protein you can take in, the more success you will have -- at least that is what I am starting to see.  Hang in there ... you are doing great, really!
