Going back and reading my own post makes me realize Im prolly the only fool on here that can understand my psycho babble..lol
But I'll be completly truthful...since my pre op I havent had one single protein supplement. I eat lot's of cheese and meat with every meal, I take my vitamins and I drink water all day long. I havent had any issues with healing or other wise. Im not saying to go against your docotrs wishes, but everyone IS different and I think Im getting in enough protein on my own, if I wasnt I would be having issues with my hypoglixemia ( I would think ).
Dont stress it...just do your best!I want to share with you a story about a woman I know , I will not give her name, but I will tell you that she too , did not do any suppliments from day one . For the first 6 months she was fine , labs were good and all was right in the world . Until , she fainted at the local Walmart. No reason why at first , then she went to her WLS . Guess what ... he did her labs again, questioned her about her protein and suppliments. She went on to tell him , that she only used food as her protein source. She now suffers from kwashiorkor.

(Symptoms of kwashiorkor include apathy, diarrhea, inactivity, failure to grow, flaky skin, fatty liver, and edema of the belly and legs. This edema is explained by the normal functioning of proteins in fluid balance and lipoprotein transport )
I swear I am not trying to be hard here. I truly care, I just want you to fully understand the repercussions from not doing your protein suppliments .
RNY patients do not in the first 2 years absorb all of our food. We may get 50 to 70 % of the nutrients we need. So unless you are eating meat all day , or cheese by the pounds, there is no way that long term you will beat not having some issue with your body because of this .
You are 3 months post op . At 6 monthts your body is going to really start recognizing that it needs to step it up , and it will begin sucking protein from where ever it can find it . It will start anywhere from your nail bed, to your hair , then it will start eating your organs. Your heart , liver , kidneys will suffer .
I myself did and always have done my suppliments. At 6 months I was up to 120 grams of protein , I lost a lot of hair . If you look at some of my before pics , you will see I had beautiful long hair . I can also contribute it to the quick weightloss .
Protein is so essential in WLS . Protein keeps your motabolism going , it fuels your body and with out the correct amounts , will cause your body to falter .
Just keep this in mind , your body still holds many nutrients , protein and hormones in your fat cells. Once this is gone , it will be up to YOU , to decide how you want to handle it .
As hypoglycemia - this is normally brought on by diabetes . It can be related to Gastric Surgeries.

Yes , we are all different . But if we can all agree that RNY patients just do not absorb our nutrients the same , and that protein is the key to success , than yes we are the same .
Please think about what I am trying to say here . If you do start to have issues later , just please get back to your surgeon as fast as you can . I just donot want to see you later on with complications .
With the utmost respect ,
Natalie
