Question about smells and nausea

I have read sever different posts regarding milk. Many can't tolerate it. Many don't think it should be in our diet. All this confuses me. When I was 2 weeks out and getting my diet increase from liquids/purees to softs, I was informed by the Nurse Practioner that I could cut back on the protein shakes if I could drink 2 8 ounce glasses of skim milk a day. Of course, being that I love milk, I gave it a try and had no problems with it. But after reading all the negative things on here, I asked her about it. Now, with out quoting her and sort of paraphrasing, she said it has something to do with the sugars in milk being natural and not added. That the milk sugar is like the sugar in the juices that are 100% natural and that it is similar to the way that the juices are able to be tolerated. She did say that she wasn't telling people to drink juice or to drink tons of milk but she isn't against the milk since it is good for protein and calcium. Guess this proves it once again that every doctor is different in how they treat their patients and in what they believe.

Hmmmmmmmmmm............. to me sugar is sugar whether added or not - it is still counted as sugar content.  And in my opinion this excuse sounds pretty lame as fruit juices whether natural or not,  are not really something we should be drinking anyway as they are indeed full of sugar, even the light ones. Why waste your calories on something like that? You get more value out of eating an orange than drinking the orange juice.... Sorry but as you get further out calories become really important and if you eat now as you want to eat for life you will save yourself a lot of grief later.... But this is my opinion - rightly or wrongly..... Jackie

I, by no means, am saying to consume all your daily calorie intake by drinking milk juice. Just made a statement as to an explanation that my nurse practioner gave me regarding why some sugar is different from others, "lame" or not! My surgeons office has ok'd milk as a source of protein and unless I become lactose intolerant or it just doesn't agree with me, I will continue to use it as a protein source. And if that, to many, means I am going to fail at this WLS, than of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but I would not agree. I have been succeeding so far. And I also do not think that me consuming milk every day whens that I am not now eating how I want to eat for life. EVERY doctor is different and EVERY patient is different. And it is on an individual basis. Ya'll have a great weekend. I think it is best that I decide to bow out for a bit.! Thanks for any and all advice!

Hey Teresa, please do not take offence to what I said  -  I never meant in any way that you would fail - and these are only my opinions! And the milk debate has been ongoing since the beginning of time - believe me! Some of us feel strongly about it - like Blair and I - and some totally disagree with it - and that is fine too.... all of us are individuals. For me personally, I do not drink milk or use it as a protein source because, in my opinion, it is not the best one - for me. And I do not want the sugar calories. But if it is working for other people then I am not saying they should stop-- - just for me those were warning signs. I truly did not mean to offend anyone - we all believe what we are doing is the best - I know that.  I do tend to get carried away sometimes. I apologize if I offended you Teresa  -that was not my intention at all.. Jackie

I agree with Blair totally on milk and I was warned by a previous nutritionist that if you take calcium supplements you can do without the 12g of sugar that milk gives you. If you drink 3 glasses a day  you have consumed 36g of totally unnecessary sugar grams.  Many doctors and nutritionists  have differing views on this too - but I have not had milk for over two years and my labs are great! And whey protein is the best for us and milk protein is way below in scales of greatness. If you look at protein shakes etc the ones that have whey protein and low sugar are the ones we all seek out. Not the ones with milk protein. The only cereal I ever do have is occasionally a small 1/2 cup of Fiber One -dry. And I do eat oatmeal........ otherwise it has not passed my lips since surgery... I drink 1/2 cup of Soy Milk, Silk, Light in the morning in a shake and 1/2 cup in the evening in a shake.  Soy protein helps the Whey protein absorb even better (and I need all the help I can get - hha).   1 cup = 70 calories                  2 Fat                  8 Carbs                  6 Sugar                  6 Protein Skim Milk - 1 cup = 91 calories                .6 Fat                 12.3 Carbs                 12.3 Sugar                 8.7 Protein Not all milk is made the same  I also use cereal on ocasion....either high protein Kay's Naturals, or grape nuts/granola/All Bran stuff that I put in my yogurt. But I agree with your point.....

In response to your post Blair ~ Milk should make  us sick at this point?  I am having milk mixed with my carnation instant breakfast and wonder if that is cause for my feeling of nausea?  I usually (pre-op) had no problem with milk but am wondering if this is why I am sick to my stomach or is it because I should expect this this early on?  What should we mix our unjury with instead of milk?  I heard it is is awful with water. Brandi ~ Sorry to hear that you have been feeling sick.  Thats the worse feeling and I know what you mean about not wanting to eat.  But I read in my book that if we don't eat and drink our liquids it could actually hinder the weight loss.  Good Luck at getting to the bottom of your feeling sick.  Let us know your outcome.... Susan  :)

One cup of milk has 12g of sugar. That is almost guaranteed dumping. All doctors are different, but our rule post-op was avoid anything with more than 3g. Even a more liberal doctor would say that 12g will mess you up.

When I went to my 2 week post op, I was told that I could stop using as much protein shakes if I added drinking 2 8 ounce glasses of skim milk daily. That's what I do every day and have never gotten sick off of milk. I loved it before and love it now. Now I am not saying I am the poster child for drinking milk post op but... as my dr advised, I can drink it for added protein and calcium. This again just proves that every doctor is different and every pouch is too. And just for the record. I don't just go out and consume any and everything that has tons of sugar grams. I like and need my milk and I do not have an issue with it. (knocking on wood).

In the first few weeks after surgery, I was told by my Dr. to use Skim milk. One cup of milk may have alot of sugar, but let's face it...I cant drink a cup! lol Im more affraid that Im malnurished at this point. With the dizzy spells and what not. I know Im not eating enough at all... There was a day this week where all I had all day was two or three servings of fruit and some crackers because I just didnt want to chance anything else. I know that's terrible and that's why I was asking for advice. I do get PLENTY of fluids in tho...I drink all day long. Im a water girl! But Im going to be very strictly making sure Im not missing any vitamins and getting in as much Isopure as possible to see if it helps. Thanks Brandi~
