I'm about 10 weeks out from surgery, and now exercising regularly (every other day at the gym).  I DONT drink caffiene, i went to bed an 1 1/2 ago, and now i'm still wide awake, i need to get up at 4:30am to take my daughter to swim team, and i can't fall asleep.  Is this surgery related?  Also, my CPAP is bothering the $)(*#&$ out of me, it seems that it is now blowing too much air (since i've lost some weight), any ideas?  thanks for listening.  lys

Hi Lys, Your CPAP machine may certainly need adjusted if you have lost over 50lbs - so you should probably go and have it checked...... and I bet they adjust it.... I have heard many people complain that they suffer from insomnia after surgery ......... so I think there may be some truth in it but it is usually when they are much further out than 10 weeks. I hope you are asleep when I send this note! Jackie

It probably is time to have your CPAP adjusted.  I know that I now need less sleep than I did before I had surgery.  You may want to try some of the tylenol sleep products to help you out.  They have the tylenol pm (if you need some pain stuff) or the Simply sleep (no pain meds).  As it is a tylenol product it is safe for our pouches.  My dr. said it is just some Benadryl and not habit forming, safe to use.  Hope it gets better for you.

Good am Lys, Yep CPAP's are finicky but you should have it adjusted. Sleeplessness is actually rather common post-op and there are many culprits. One for me is NOT walking later in the evening but rather earlier in the day due to the release of endorphins from the body which makes me a lot more alert and live wire like. Also, eating/drinking too close to bed time sometimes has that effect on me. But, the CPAP is a big deal. Hope this help! All best!

I am three weeks out and have had insomnia terrible since having my surgery. I was glad to read the replies from everyone, now I know I am not alone. I was guessing mine was from not being at work and exhausting myself since I work two jobs.............hmm.

Definitely have your CPAP re-titrated.  If it is set to high for you now, it can actually cause central apnea - which is worse than obstructive apnea.

I don't have any problem with insomnia, but I did have the same feeling with my cpap blowing too much air.  I just did a followup with my sleep disorder doctor and he had me come in for another sleep study last week.  I'm anticipating the results to see what he has to say.  I suggest you at least get in for a followup and see what they can do for you!  Best of luck!
