Need some real...non judgemental advice

Ok so Im just going to be honest...

I have been having a SERIOUS itch for a night out with drinking involved. I certainly dont need to be plastered by any means but Im curious to know if there's any advice I need for this situation.

Like what type of drinks I should stay away from?

You see prior to my surgery, I could mix ANY type of drinks and never even had a headache the next morning. BUT I always liked the fruitier drinks and Im sure those have to much sugar for me to tolerate....so...any suggestions? Shot's maybe? Im really clueless.

I have had a couple lil thing's since my surgery. Such as a toast at a wedding and a few sip's of a sex on the beach which was always my fav drink but I could tell earlier on that it was too sweet. Or maybe I was just to scared to drink more than a couple sips at a time.

Ive never had dumping syndrome but I do get sweaty and sickly if I have to much sugar...

?

Brandi~

Glad you came to us to ask.  I will tell you first off that the sweaty/sticky feeling is in fact dumping...just a milder case of it.

I am not condoning drinking and with that said, if you really want to go drinking here is my advice.....
STAY AWAY FROM SHOTS!!!  You will get plastered on just one drink now where as before you could probably have several and barely feel it and you should not be gulping/slamming anyway.  When I do drink I tend to stick to Vodka mixed with cranberry juice, maybe also some pineapple and or orange juice.  Unfortunately it is a trial and error situation.  I  can not tolerate a lot of what I had pre surgery so I stick to what I know.  Being as far out as I am now I find I have just as good of a time if not a better time drinking water and dancing and the alcohol is not needed.  But if I want it...I do have a drink.  Your "itch" concerns me and I really think you should consider NOT doing this.  You are still really newly post op considering and I do not think your surgeon would approve.  I think most of them say you must wait a year minimum before having ANYTHING.  Good luck!

PS  I am NOT being judgemental...just my opinion!

Brandi - This is not meant to be judgmental, just advice. I have had drinks since surgery, but I don't crave them.  I also found that a couple of drinks a day for 2 or 3 days in a row can cause my weight to fluctuate.

If you have a "serious itch" for alcohol, you might want to resist having ANYTHING to drink. That type of craving can lead to serious problems since you'll find you can drink more than you can eat. Think "transfer addiction".  The night out with friends should be fun without alcohol.

 Be careful, girlie!

This is a joke, right? Please someone tell me that this is a joke!

No it's not a joke...I guess Im still not used to people having a problem with asking honest questions on this forum. It can be so nice sometimes to ask an honest question and get some respect.
I dont hide in bush's and pretend to be a great patient in all situations, while all the time smoking in the corner and passing judgments on others. Im an up front person and I had an honest question and Im glad to get honest answers.
You certainly dont have to agree with the thing's I do or say...BUT THE SARCASTIC REMARKS ARENT NEEDED NOR APPRECIATED!!!

Thanks for clarifying. It is refreshing to see your response, which was clearly devoid of sarcasm.

I stand corrected.

Okay I'm still preop, but I have several friends that have had GBS. We didn't go out to drink, but rather made them at home and my husband plays bartender. Anyway, We found a mix of crystal light (strawberry, orange, banana) and some vodka was good and didn't cause anyone to dump. We also made some sugarfree jello shots for them. Keep in mind they are both several years out of surgery so I don't know how soon this can be tolerated.

I realize these aren't going to be on any menus, but that's what we did to have a few drinks without any dumping.

Brandi -- I don't know what you have heard or read about alcohol with GBS, but my understanding is that it really isn't a good mix.  Because of the way "things" have been re-routed, alcohol affects us much differently than the "average Joe."  That, coupled with the possibility of what is commonly known as "transfer addiction,"  it is something to avoid.  Of course, then there's always those darned calories...and lots of them.  If I could offer a suggestion -- forego the alcohol, but still mix the drinks using low cal mixes, enjoy the company you're with, and that might cure the cravings a little.  I hope that helps.

Ok apparently "Itch" was a bad word to use. Im only feeling the need for a fun night out ( which I do maybe twice a year tops ) and I thought Id ask advice on what I should not drink.

I certainly am not looking to get plastered as I said before. I just wanted to have a social drink and I wanted to ask advice.

Thanks

Brandi,

That's why I responded the way I did.  You can (and probably will) get plastered on one drink.  Just be careful.  I am not passing judgement.  I have in the past ordered a drink then an extra cup, split the drink and added more juice to cut the amount of alcohol I consume.  I stand firm on the no to the shots.  Please have a good time.  That's what life is all about.  I hope I did not offend you.
