Hi! from an old friend
Hi Pielet,
Thank you SOOO much for posting. It's great to see you again and you look fabulous! I'm sorry to hear about all you've been through--that's a lot to handle at once.
I have also struggled with staying off the boards because I felt I was a slow loser. I know that comparing myself to others is an exercise in futility---but it doesn't stop me from doing it!
The problem is, we can't compare ourselves to others, we need to look at the ratio of our own weight loss to the total we have to lose. After reading your post, I did the math.
You've lost approximately 71% of your excess weight! Awesome!
(88.2/117)
I've lost over 60% of my excess weight in less than 6 months!
(75.5/125)
Someone who lost 110 pounds but has 200 to lose has lost 55% of their excess weight. (110/200) See? It looks like they are losing faster than us because their actual weight loss is more, but we need to look at the PERCENTAGE of EWL for ourselves. It's individual. We are comparing ourselves to others, but the real math we need to do is take the amount we lost, divided by the amount we need to lose, and there's the percentage lost.
I need to take my own advice and remember this. We are ALL in this together whether we have 100 or 300 pounds to lose. When folks stay away from the boards (myself included), we perpetuate the feeling of "being less than" that many of us have struggled with our entire lives.
I hope you'll keep posting--you've inspired me to find my voice and post again too!
Hugs,
Grace

Hi Grace,
Thank you for the nice thoughts!! It's good to hear from you, too!
Sometimes I think fighting my mind is an exercise in futility
, which is about all the exercise I get nowadays...
Thank you for writing the percentage stuff--I knew that, but completely forgot about it, and it definitely helps with perspective.
And you have inspired me, also, to hang around and voice our experiences as valid and important.
Take care--
Pielet

Hi Cin,
Nice to meet you and congrats on your recent surgery and 26 (!) lb. loss in one month. Awesome!
Since I definitely don't consider myself an expert on "the tool," I'm going to post a new topic for everyone to respond to.
I'm sorry you are having such a hard time now. Many of us have gone up and down (emotionally, physically, weight-wise), but it does pass. If you keep feeling lousy, I hope you call your doc. It's always better to check that nothing else is going on.
Take care and keep an eye out for the new post--

You're looking fab, Pielet! You may find it hard to see the changes but we all do (evident by the many replies)! WTG- you're right... we couldn't have lost the amount of weight we have (even if it's "small" compared to others) if we hadn't had the VSG so... let's take what we get, no? :)
See you around more often, I hope!
Hi Pielet!
I remember you from the early days... and am so glad to hear from you.
83 lbs is an AMAZING achievement. Look how wonderful you look and I am sure you feel like a different person. We are all traveling down this road at a different pace and none are right nor wrong. We cannot judge (even though we judge ourselve the harshest!).
I have felt a lot of the EXACT same feelings you have and understand your break from this board. My thoughts are with you, your partner and your children.
Don't be a stranger... you are an inspiration.
Congratulations.
Susan
OMG--another one I never would have recognized! You look fantastic, Susan! Thank you for your kind words, and I do feel like a new person.
I am so grateful for this surgery and I truly appreciate your thoughts for my family.
Hope to see you soon!

Hi Pielet,
Welcome back! It is very good to hear from you. You are looking terrific! With all the stressful things you have been dealing with, it is just amazing that you have done as well as you have. I don't know, to me 83 lbs in about 9 months doesn't seem so slow. That's about how much I lost in the same amount of time. I think it just feels slow while it's going on because we want the weight to come off NOW!!! But that's almost 10 lbs a month overall. Anyway, I'm glad you can finally see the change in yourself. That's great! Please keep in touch.
