Hi Kelball: I used to go to New Smyrna Beach all the time... from about 1980 through 2001.  Loved it :) (Lived/had family in Central Florida.) EVERYBODY is nervous.  I actually wonder about the people who aren't nervous at all. It's surgery.  Real surgery.  I think sometimes people discount that fact because it's lap. BUT, the VSG is one of the safest bariatric surgeries out there.  This is the procedure they do as a first-step on people who are so super morbidly obese and sick that they couldn't successfully undertake a full-DS or RNY.  So, trust that.  Also, are you comfortable with your surgeon? The number of VSGs he's done?? If so, that should help. We all take pause when anybody has a surgical complication or death.  We all know that it could have been us.  But reality is that our risks of dying young are much greater if we stay morbidly obese than if we undertake bariatric surgery. Good luck :)  You'll do fine!

Lap-Band June 14, 2001. Dr. Rumbaut, Monterrey, Mexico.
Lap-Band removed after 7 years and converted to Sleeve Gastrectomy on July 7, 2008 by Dr. Roslin.  I've had three happy healthy Lap-Band babies.... and one VSG baby.  5 years out from revision to VSG.  Gained 55 pounds in past 5 months, now considering DS. :(

I was scared to death too.  As I was being put to sleep I remember praying.  Put it in God's hands and stop worrying.

First off, there is a huuuuge difference between the RNY and the VSG.  Secondly, your age and good health is a factor, as well.  My VSG was a 45 minute procedure.  I was admitted one morning and discharged at noon the next day.  I had soreness for 5 days in my abdominal area only when I leaned forward getting out of bed or out of my recliner.  My doctor was highly experienced and the hospital staff was top notch.  Of course there is an inheritant risk of dying with any surgery, walking down the street or driving or riding in a car.  The statistics are clearly on your side of having a successful surgery.  For me, without the surgery, I was already dead.

We're all rooting for you.  It's going to be a breeze for you.  Please let us know how you're doing.

Even a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step!

xena thank you for your reply.  I will go into surgery tomorrow at 7:30a.m.  ready or not its gonna happen.  I have prepared myself as much as possible so I just have to be  perfect at hydrating and not moving around to quickly.  My fear is leakage so I know what I gotta do.  You have done fantastic, 100 lbs in what, 5 months, increditble.  Keep up the fantastic work. Kelly
