I Hate Protein Shakes

That's exactly what I'm drinking and although I haven't  it's the smell that gets me. I mixed it a little differently using 1/2 water, 1/2 ff milk w/ one sccop. Seemed to be a little better. But the SMELL of it is my problem. Seems like after the surgery, I've become very sensitive to smells.  Hopefully that foolishness will pass.

I finally found a way to drink protein drinks - I make vanilla flavored shakes and add PB2 and some banana to it. Oh - and sometimes I add DaVince vanilla syrup - the sugar free one.

I do like the bullets too - but I try not to use them too much. Mixing them with crystal light works well.

I have some Unjury samples of their unflavored protein powder and I heard that they mix well with Crystal Light too but I haven't tried it yet.

Overall - at 6 months out I rely on protein from sources more than shakes/bullets but I still need these 1-2x a week to make sure I hit my protein goals.

Good luck!

I also had my surgery on the 14th & I too HATE protein shakes. Since I've been home I havn't even had one from my powder forms. The thought, the smell, the IDEA of it makes me want to bow to the porcelein god. I've been doing really bad on the protein. The only thing that I can semi-stomach are the ISOPURE fruity drinks you can buy at GNC or online. They are approx $5.00 for a 20 oz bottle which has 40 grams of protein in them. They come in all different flavors- the best for me so far was grape or fruit punch. They have a Kool-Aid type texture so it's not bad going down.  Although, It's been 11 days or so since surgery, I've only been able to drink about 3 of these bottles since then.  Nobody look to me as a nutrition role-model please! I am trying to stick it out til week 3-4 so I can eat some real food. My body is aching for calories and protein! But, try the drinks, they aren't too bad.

Those Isopure drinks leave a funky after taste. I tried them before the surgery couldn't even finish. I read somewhere that the bullets should only be used if they are WHEY protein. Have a grape in the house with 42 grams of protein. I mixed that with grape no sugar mix and water in a 33.6 oz bottle and threw it in the freezer. It didn't taste to bad. Have a doc appt. tomorrow and will ask him about it. Looking forward to Wednesday to get back to food.
Was a little ambitious yesterday and tried 8 tiny shrimp from the can. I kept thinking it's only 3 days. What harm could .............?
HA! Paid the price. I'm a little scary now but I know it's the next step. Let me know how it goes with you.

Are you guys mixing the drink by hand or using a blender? I couldn't stand the protein drinks either until I started making them in a blender with lots of ice. Now they are more like a smoothy or a milk shake in consistency and they go down much easier.

I still have to put a lot of SF Syrups in them but that's as much for variety as for taste.

I've tried both and it doesn't matter. It's the smell that does me in.

Nose plugs??

I know I had an issue with the bullets where I couldn't smell them, if I wanted to get them down. I would put them in cups with lids. But eventually I couldn't get them down at all.

Another thing I found was that 100% whey tended to bother my tummy. So now I do ones that have both whey and soy.

I am pre-op , hoping for mid feb or early march surgery so I have been trying shakes.  I like the bottled/packaged kind because they are quick and easy and already perfectly mixed.  I figure at 3.50 or 4.00 it is still less than I spend on a meal.  I am really liking the Oh Yeah choc. shake and even like vanilla which I don't usually like.  I like that it is creamy and it has 32 gms of protein per bottle...  I can't seem to handle the isopure type fruity stuff... the fake sugar and fake fruit tastes just throws me over the line !

Just a word of advice........... I don't know how many ounces are in that bottle of Oh Yeah, but you have to keep in mind that after the surgery, it may take you the entire day to finish that bottle. And at the end of that day, you will have only gotten in 1/2 of your required protein for the day. You are pretty much basing everything on RIGHT NOW, which is what we all do. You could have bought me for a dime when I discovered those big "delicious" shakes I started drinking during my pre-op diet, would become my enemy after surgery.
The one thing I think most of us agree on is that after surgery, things don't quite taste the same and personally I've become VERY sensitive to smells.  Worst part is I'm beginning to think that because I'm taking in less protein, my bowels are being affected. I haven't pooped in DAYS
Thank goodness I get to start soft mushy food tomorrow.  I'm hoping to get most of my protein from that. Fish (baked or poached) was on my soft mushy list. Since a 3-4 oz fillet has about 22 grams of protein in it, my plan is to make that my main source for protein. Fish & seafood! That's if I can keep it down. I'm going to try cooking it, then putting it in my Magic Bullet. I may have finally found a use for it.

Thank you, Robbyn, that makes a LOT of sense, and is something I worried about.  That is why I also bought and tried some of the more watery ones like the Isopures ... but I cannot handle them now .. could I LIKE them better after ??  Any ideas as to what I should use just after surgery that will get in enough protein but be less bulky?  I have a couple of those 42 gram protein bullets but have been afraid to try them ..

That's good advice on the fish.  Is that ANY type of fish that high in protein?  I have heard that taste changes, and have been worried that things like fish would turn me off .. but you're right, I won't know until after surgery.

Re constipation, I take the Fiber Choice chewables, which really help ... but not sure those are allowed post surgery ?
