well said, macmadame. I bet you have that article hanging around -- the one that talks about how there is some evidence that the malabsorption part of the DS/RNY is unnecessary considering the risks. I cannot find it in my stuff, but I'll keep looking.

I think that was a push to go find it.

I don't think the malabsorption part is unnecessary for everyone. But I do think the sleeve will replace the RnY one day. Why pay more money to have a riskier operation to get similar EWL results?

But then I'm one of those people who doesn't get how bypass came to be the Gold Standard anyway.

Malabsorption may not be needed for YOU, but that doesn't make it so for everyone. The DS is the only WLS that boasts a 98.9% cure rate for type 2 diabetes. I have diabetes, so going with anything other than the DS for me would, IMO, be foolish.

I am glad that you found a surgery that will help you with your diabetes. I was not stating that malabsorption is not necessary for anyone -- I was just hoping MacMadame had the article I had read recently about finding regarding the benefit or lack thereof from the malabsorption component of WLS. It was an interesting article, but definitely not definitive (it was just one study).

It can be found on the asbs.org site.  That is the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

It's interesting that the diagram is copyrighted by  Dallal, who has only done a handful of DS's and Schauer, who hasn't done any.

Although this is the ASMBS site, the information on the comparision of DS and BPD is full of inaccuracies.  Remember, the majority of the leadership of the ASMBS are non-DS surgeons with their own agendas.

Newbies:  Get your DS info from a real DS surgeon.  See dsfacts.com or duodenalswitch.com for a list of vetted DS surgeons.

PRE OPS ...  Want a surgery that has the least chance of long-term re-gain, is BEST at curing your Diabetes (98%+), removes much of the hunger hormone Ghrelin, NO DUMPING, NO MARGINAL ULCERS and NO STOMA / STRICTURES? CURIOUS WHY I CHOSE THE DS?  VISIT MY PROFILE.

Your source is outdated and wrong. Try using up to date information next time. Your mother's "old intestinal bypass" was not the DS.

I didn't say my Mom's old procedure and DS were the same.  I said that her experience is one of the reasons I don't want my intestinal tract messed with.  Period.

Your source is still outdated and wrong. The BPD has not been done for quite some time, and it is quite different from the DS. Kindly cease and desist from spreading old wives' tales about the DS.

Then write the Amer. Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons and ask them to revise their site.  I choose to believe actual surgeons over internet posters.   Don't tell me what to "cease and desist" from.  **** off.
