Feel like I just got ripped off

You paid $150.  That's less than what I paid.  I had $350 for my tab.  When I gently brought it up to the surgeon how expensive I found it, the response I received was that, "X" specific psych knew how to put things in writing to the insurance companies so that there were never any problems.  That being said, I did get a little more than that for my $350.  In addition to the questionnaires, 3 of them, we spent about 45 minutes going over the changes mentally I would have to make and the mental issues that might arise if I went back to my bad habits pre-WLS.

Best,
Marci

Wow, why did you pay so much? I only paid $150 for the psych evaluation...and we have the same surgeon! I had to pay in cash too.

Sorry, I just went back and re-read. You paid $150 too, but it sounds like it was not good.

I figured that the appt with the psychologist was to weed out any people who expected WLS to fix their life. Or magically cause them to be skinny. Or who are just plain unbalanced. I thought of it as an insurance requirement, not something to help us. I didn't think she would give me anything that would help my lose weight. She did suggest I get into therapy to help with my eating, and I might still do that if I feel like I need to at some point.

Luckily, mine was covered by our insurance's mental health provisions.  He was a nice guy and actually asked some pertinent questions, but when it was over he said "I don't know why they make y'all do this.  There's no need for it if you don't have any past mental health history, or any current issues."

Wow, mine cost $245.00 - also cash - my psych wouldn't take insurance either.  I can say I got my money's worth though - 3 hours - 600 question test that was sent away to be graded and I was called with the results 1 week later.

Doctor talked with me for atleast 30 minutes to determine my stability level.  I think that is what the psych evaluation is primarily about - whether you are mentally stable and mentally prepared for the changes associated with surgery.

I understand completely. I was hoping for an actual evaluation.  I didn't even have to fill anything out! She asked me how I felt about the surgery, if I understood my obligations afterwards and the nutritional information I had received.  I said yes.  She said, "OK, just let me sign this and you can pay the cashier on your way out!" I was in there for less than 10 minutes.

At least I was able to pay my $150 with a credit card (no debit cards or checks??).  But I felt pretty ripped off, too.
