She wants to know if it's harder, or just describe your experience if you have had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time as your vsg

Thanks!

I did have a hiatal hernia repair at the same time as my VSG...I didn't even know I had the hernia going in.  I think the recovery is probably a little more uncomfortable, because you had two surgical procedures at the same time, but it is manageable and definitely a bonus to have that situation taken care of at the same time.  I had wonderful doctors *****ally were sensitive to managing my pain and recovery, so I didn't have any big problems or complications.

Hope this helps, but feel free to contact me if you or your Aunt have any further questions.

VSG on 08/07/08 with
Dr. Alvarez repaired "an enormous hiatal hernia" when he did my sleeve.  I did have some discomfort right below my sternum for about three days from it, but the worst I can say is that it was an intense ache that got steadily less as the three days went by.  That was all the "pain" I experienced, and it was not bad at all.  It was way worth it!     --Dorothy

Thanks for asking this.  I found out at my endoscopy that I have one that will need repairing during surgery too.

I had my band removed, hiatal hernia repaird and sleeved all at once.  Never had ANY pain.  I told him he was miracle worker on pain, because I never hit my pain pump in the hospital and never took any meds once home.  It  was almost like I never had anything done.  Only time I noticed anything is when trying to sleep and rolling onto my stomach accidentally., but even that went away after about the 3rd day, I could sleep on my stomach no problems.

I had both done at the same time.  Didn't even know I had the hiatal hernia.  The most difficult part for me was when I would burp.  There was a lot of pain at the sternum area.  It has definately gotten better.  It only bothers me a couple of times a day when I'm drinking fluids.  I assume it will go away completely soon.  Good luck to your aunt!
Life is good!

I had both and I do think it slowed down my recovery a bit. I had a lot of back pain from the hernia repair. I really pushed my pain meds (which helped), but I wish I had taken 2 weeks off from work instead of 1.5.
