Does the VSG work for grazers?

I don't know, I'm only 4 months out. Actually, I had much more "hunger" earlier on. Now, food isn't very appealing, and there's not a lot that I like anymore. Mostly because it doesn't agree with me very well. I used to love food, but not so much anymore. That's kinda too bad, but it's 1000s of times better than the alternative - overeating all the time and not wanting to. I imagine if you educate yourself you'll do fine. I was worried about the same thing as you, and then so many people stated they were in a similar position as me, and I thought, "Okay, this could work for me, too." You can look back at my early posts if you like :-)

I was a grazer pre-op, but it's a no-no post-op (at least in my doctor's practice). The good news, though, (at least for me) is that a small amount of food satisfies you, so once you eat your few ounces of protein, you are FULL and won't want to graze. It's much, much, much easier post-op not to graze. I am by no means perfect, but when I do graze, I try to go for something protein--a piece of beef jerky or cheese or some pumpkin seeds. Okay, and once in a while, some chocolate :-)

I have never been hungry 1 minute since surgery.  I eat now to give me energy and because I still like to eat.   I am careful only to eat at my meals and a snack at night.  I'm never ever hungry.  I could ruin this by eating chips and crap but I choose to be thin.  Very Very happy with this choice..... Well, if you graze on healthy snacks ;)

I used to graze all day, but now I don't feel the need to (never hungry). I try to get my water in between meals...it can be tricky if you graze too much, though (not enough room/time).

I haven't felt hunger since the surgery. I can go all day and never think about food.I have to make myself eat every 3 hours.
I don't have any regrets, they can talk about me plenty when I'm gone....Bob Dylan

Hi Jen

I was absolutely a grazer before my VSG, and I would still call myself a grazer of sorts because I eat about six times a day. The difference is that I cannot eat even close to what I did before, I am quickly satisfied when I do eat, and even if I wanted to, I couldn't eat more than my little tummy can hold. I know exactly when I have had enough. Even my food choices have changed, I used to have a sweet tooth, and while I indulge in the odd treat occasionally, I prefer the healthier options now. I had convinced myself when I was a yo yo dieter than if there was a small percentage who would fail, then I would fit into that slot. I had a lap band 2005 and I believed I was a failure with that too as I watched all my banded friends lose lots of weight. My problem turned out to be a mechanical fault with the band so finally I could accept that it wasn't my fault that I had such a poor result. In the early months after my revision, I really wanted to believe that the sleeve would work for me, but I still wasn't 100% sure until I saw new photos of myself and realized that I was looking really good. Without my sleeve I would be 65lbs heavier, so yes, I believe it will help you too! Marion

I wasn't a grazer before my sleeve... but I am definitely a grazer now!  I prepare 3 healthy, protein rich meals a day, but cannot eat a whole entire meal at any one time.  Finishing my meal is what I graze on during the day.  I had the surgery 3 months ago and have lost 57 pounds.

I would say that WLS of any kind would not work for grazers.  You would have to get a handle on this.  I never considered myself a grazer, more like ZERO portion control but about 3-4 months out I found myself constantly grazing(mind you, they were healthy snacks but eating constantly does nothing for weight loss).  I do find that when I up my fluid intake it cuts out the grazing a great deal.  I do feel hunger but I'm satisfied pretty easily with such a small portion.  However, 2-3 hours later, I'm hungry again.  I'm not saying this in no way to be negative, just honest about my situation.  WLS is just not a miracle cure all.
