I really need to get back on my Prozac 3 weeks post op but no one seems to know if you can open them and put on applesauce or something. Dr. says ask pharmacist but don't swallow capsule, pharmacy says ask Dr.      Cheez louise!!   Anyone have an answer.

interesting.  At my consult I spoke to my doc about taking meds/pills post op and asked how long Id have to wait, and he said that I didn't.... that he's never had a problem with a patient taking their pill, just to space out pills thru the day.

I m a little over 4 weeks post op and I take two capsules per day.  I tried the opening them and
putting them in applesauce and it gaged me every time.  You should be Ok to swallow them.
Of course I am not a dr. but I did.  Best of luck to you.

I've taken Prozac for 15 yrs. and continue to do so now.  I just open up the capsule and put it in yogurt or popsicle.  My doc is still hesitant to let me swallow pills, and I am 5 months out.

Okay, first let me say this: this is NOT medical advice...

But here's what I was told/my life experience:

I take Cymbalta, which is very similar to Prozac in that it's a gel capsule thingy filled with "micro-beads" of meds...when I got my lap-band, my doctor had me sprinkle the Cymbalta in applesauce/yogurt/etc.  But then when I got my sleeve, my "new" doctor said I could take the Cymbalta capsules whole two days after surgery.  I had no problems doing this...

So here's MY HUMBLE OPINION: get back on your antidepressant either way.  It will not hurt you to take it in applesauce because it is NOT time release, but it is PROBABLY okay to take whole too...but if your doctor already said no to that at this point, don't go against his orders at my expense.

What I do know sure as anything: it will f*ck with you more if you DON'T get your meds at all...depression is serious stuff...3 weeks without meds is plenty.

Good luck!

If I remember correctly, I think the prozac capsules are about the same size as the Welbutrin..and that is what I was taking post op.  I took them the very next day after surgery...so you should be fine to take them!

My dr. did not want me too take whole pills for 3 months.  I take omeprazole (prilosec) in capsule form.  I open the capsule, dump the contents on a large soup spoon, pour apple juice on the spoon, and swallow it down.   It works for me/

I've been taking my prozac since day 7 after surgery. I swallow capsule whole with a lil water. I dont eat or drink anything for awhile just to make sure i dont throw up. At first I would throw up if I drank too much. No problems with taking it since.  I would take it as soon as you can. 3 weeks without woulda screwed me up!

I was given capsules in the hospital the day after surgery.  I was also given liquid carafate to protect my tummy from all meds.  Have you asked your doc why the ban on you taking capsules?  Sometimes it is because they are still using the RNY or lap band guidelines.
