Answer the following two questions, if you choose.  I'll go first.

1.  Please state why you are/were fat.

I let my eating get out of control and allowed my food addiction to take over.

2.  Are you responsible for your being fat?

Yes.

(EDIT:  I eliminated the "scientific experiment" phrase and left question one more open-ended for those who want more latitude in explaining their obesity.)

1.  Please state, in one sentence, the single main reason you are/were fat.

I ate too many calories, which I let turn to fat instead of working them off with exercise.

2.  Are you responsible for your being fat?

Yes.

I could never muster up the willpower to stick with a plan because of slow results; I'd get burnt out and quit.

I am responsible...

(however, I'm cheating... I think  childhood eating, decisions our parents play a big part in why women get hormone imbalances, PCOS, and other health factors that can contribute to ****ty weight loss results in adult hood... I don't blame them.. but I do think that some people have a harder time dieting than others)

ah but yogurt works? no cookies for me...Ya know though.. to further this science experiment.. I almost felt peer pressured to answer the second one as yes I am responsible..Maybe that's a lack of maturity on my part..I dunno.. to not "own" my fatness... but I truly believe childhood choices influence the adults we become... and I was hairy and had a big stomach at like age 11... and was dieting all thru puberty...I think now as an adult.. making it to 270... I was responsible for... I could've been less with better choices... but I'd have still been obese... just not 270 obese...I dunno. But I didn't want to be the one making excuses.. and now I am... so it's like.. bah. Dunno. :) I'll be the odd one out for your science experiment...

There is no right answer.

I am merely asking why you are fat, and if that is your responsibility.  Take from it what you will.
