On my pre surg diet I was allowed  a protein drink for breakfast made with skim milk, a protein drink for lunch made with water, 4oz each of protein, veg, fruit, all the broth I wanted and all the SF jello I wanted, all the SF popsicles I wanted.  I lost 20lbs in 3 weeks.  You need to track every bite you take and make sure you are weighing your food and measuring your food.  Guesstimates on food portion never ever work really.  There are lots of free tracking programs, I use Fatsecret.com but there are lots of them and they are helpful.  I track every mouthful of food I eat.  When you go out plan ahead so you won't overindulge, its easy to get back into bad habits.  When you get sleeved these are things you will have to do to be successful.  Your sleeve won't do it all for you, you will still have to make sure you put the right things and the right amounts into it or it won't be a good tool for you.  The sleeve doesn't work itself, you work the sleeve.  Good Luck!

I had 6 months to lose 10lbs. I was stupid and didnt do it. When i went back to my WLS team they gave me ONE more chance. I had to lose 20lbs in TWO months. I did it though, i lost 24lbs. I was put on a 2 week liquid diet then a 1200 Cal diet.

what do you wanna be when you grow up little girl? i wanna be a loser and sit on the bench sir! (45 lbs lost pre op) 300lbs starting weight, currently 141lbs! Lowest has been 135lbs and hoping to get back to that.

When I first went to my doctor; they told me I didn't have to lose anything just try not to gain any more.  They said they used the weight that you came in with for the insurance papers.  Later I found out that other people lost anywhere from 10-40lbs prior to surgery.  Some doctors in my city, require their patients to be on clear liquids for 10 days prior to surgery, my doctor just required 3 days prior to sugery and 7 days prior to that was protein drinks.  By the time I had surgery, I had lost 12lbs.
I talked to the insurance company and they told me that they didn't have a required weight loss before approval for surgery that it was only what diseases you had and how much you are overweight that mattered and how much they (insurance company) would save in the long run by allowing you to have the surgery vs other surgeries, and medications if you didn't have the surgery.

I guess what I am saying is each doctor / and insurance company has their own requirement for what they want you to lose.  I really think it is the doctor more than the insurance company. I do know there is something to losing a little for shrinking the liver.

Hang in there and keep doing what you are told, drink as much water as you can (min 64oz daily), and it will happen. IF YOU ARE DRINKING COLA OR ANY KIND...GET RID OF IT NOW!
That can make you gain weight and you can't have it after surgery so stop today!

Best Wishes,

Make sure you read your insurance company's wording regarding WLS. If you don't have it, you can call and request and online link to it. Read it carefully. I didn't at first, and then realized that I wasn't supposed to lose weight. I had to show failure of diet. I did and was approved. Good luck!
