I had a drain. They took it out on the second day after surgery. It wasn't bad at all.

Um...EWWW! (this subject makes me queezy),
No I did not have to go through that (thankfully). I didn't have any filters installed in my corroded arteries either and I understand they do that to some people too. Whatever they have to do is still worth it.

I did - woke up with it - it doesn't hurt - they took it out before I left the hospital - I was scared it was going to hurt - it didn't - just felt weird!!!

speaking as a nurse, I am pretty sure it depends on the amount of fat on your abdomen,  Fat doesn't heal as well as regular tissue, and if they have to insert the laprocope thru a lot of fat layers, they will be more likely to leave a drain, so any fluid that collects has a place to go, instead of collecting under the fat and causing infection.. The deeper the incision, the more fluid can collect

I had a drain for 5 days after surgery--if I can remember from my drug haze, it was so they could measure the stuff in it, which could mean a leak. My doc said that if there is a leak, generally, but not always, it happens in the first 5 days.

I had a drain until I was about to leave hospital.  I had no catheter, thank goodness, I did wake up with a tube up my nose attached to a  of blue dye. This is the way my surgeon tests for leaks. If the drain is blue there is a leak. that got taken out after about 7 hours thank goodness. Pain pump and fluid drip in my arm. also had to have insulin in the evening. All got taken away bit by bit. That way you knew you were going home

I had a drain and it was taken out before I left the hospital.  I do know by testing the fluid that drains into this little bulb they could tell whether or not I had any leakage.
