How long does it take the swelling and fluid retention to go down?  I am 5 days post-op.  I noticed when they weighed me before I left the hospital I weighed 4 more lbs. then when I came in.  I have since lost those 4 lbs...but still feel bloated some.  Just wondering....

I was swollen for a few weeks.  Then it went away almost overnight.  It takes longer than you expect it to!

I weighed my surgery-morning weight at day 9 (yikes) but I had massive doses of steroids the day of surgery and next 4 days due to an adrenal condition. Most people are closer to you - it takes a few days.

But by day 14 I was down 7 lbs. Give yourself another week.

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22

175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012

At my 1 week post op appointment the nurse told be that most people have gained a few pounds from the day of surgery weight when she weighs them at the 1 week appointment.  So I would say it will take at least a week.

Hi, I had a VSG on 29April and I had no bloating, not even the gas I was warned about. However, I did have swelling in my abdomen. I was released from the hospital on Sunday and did not use any pain meeds at home until last night, Wednesday. I found that when I took the pain meds and got a full night sleep (previously I had tolerable pain, but had not slept through the night), it allowed me to get good rest and I think that allowed my body to begin better healing because today there was no abdomen swelling. In addition I had four bile movements yesterday. If you have intestinal bloating it may be because your colon is full. Good luck!
