1st Day: 2wk Liquid Pre-Op Diet

Okay, so today was my first day on the 2 week liquid pre-op diet that my surgeon has required me to be on. I've been doing quite well, actually. I feel a LOT bit sluggish, but I'm not as hungry as I thought I'd be, which lets me know that HUNGER is REAL, but it also can simply be a "mind" thing. However, this diet has caused me a lot of gas (TMI) and my stomach has been growling immensely. I feel tired,  and my mouth feels dry,  but I've been trying to down as many liquids as I can.

So, JELL-O is on my list as one of the clear liquids that I can have, but I MUST say that I absolutely detest eating it. I bought gobs and gobs of it, yet I hate it!!! I need another alternative. Also, I've been urinating every 5 minutes, which I guess is a good thing! LOL

This is a brief synopsis of what my doctor has ordered:

(1) Drink 8-10 8 oz. glasses of water everyday.

(2) Drink 1 can of low sugar, protein supplement, ex (Generic brand of Slim Fast         or Glucerna *if diabetic*) 3 times a day.

(3) You may choose from any of these clear liquids to drink throughout the day          to supplement the water and protein drink :

Crystal Light
Coffee (sugar free sweetener/non-dairy creamer may be used)
       Kool-Aid (sugar free)
Tea (sugar free sweetener may be used)
Sugar free jello (without fruit pieces)
Broth soups only (without noodles, vegetables, or meat)
       Popsicles (sugar free)
       Carbonated drinks (sugar free)

I just wanted to share this with those of you who were NOT put on a pre-op diet, or who is looking for something to do before surgery and don't know where to start. This MAY be a starting point.

One thing that worked for me was to make the jello a little firmer.  I can't stand the squishie stuff.  After the 1 cup of boiling water I only add a half cup of cold water, at the most.  This makes a firmer and for me a more palatable "beverage".  I also love the sugar-free popsicles but am only allowed two a day.
My thoughts are with you and good luck with your journey to a new life!

I've been on liquid diets a lot due to my history with Pancreatitis.  My surgery is scheduled for June 7th.  I have to say that broth and sugar free popiscles and jello are what have gotten me through it.  Popiscles are most like food in my opinion.  Because they are somewhat solid and you can chew them.

I am exactly where you are. I am entering my 2nd week of the 2wk liquid diet, and it has been difficult for me to not "cheat" I've even resorted to chewing food and spitting it out (I know- bad patient) at any rate I encourage you to keep going and I hate Jello too but it is the only thing that I can actually chew besides the popsicles. I am happy that you shared your experience because it helps me to know that I am not alone.

Thank you.

I start mine this thursday and I am soooo nervous! I am not that worried about that first week, I just have a feeling that by the second week I will go crazy from all the shakes.

Good luck to all of us!
