Don't know that it would decrease the wait period as that depends on insurance and surgeon requirements ... but a pre-op diet focusing on protein, veg and a small amount of complex carbs will get your body in good condition for the surgery, as well as prepare you for post-op eating habits. Sounds like a great idea!

Thanks!  I'm mostly concerned with swelling in the liver, etc.. just in case, you know!

Yep - that is a major consideration for laproscopic VSG - and a fatty liver will typically resolve if you switch to a low carb / lower fat diet.

I can tell you that I started easing into my pre-op diet ahead of time, and when I had to go on full liquids for two weeks, this helped me out A LOT.  Maybe start cutting out caffine, carbonated drinks, fast foods, sugars and other junk if you haven't yet.  Then, the two weeks before my full liquids I started replacing two meals a day with shakes.  I had no problem with my full liquid diet doing it that way, plus it has helpled me not miss things so much post-op.

Thank you very much!  l will start this right away.  l just didn't want to have to postpone my surgery because of something l could have done to prevent it.  l'm glad to hear that it helped you so much.

I know you are excited.  Like Margo and Kristy said, I think it might help to ease into it.  Like stopping the caffiene, sugar and fast foods.  Giving up my diet soda was very hard and I started it before I had my date and I'm glad I did.  Take baby steps until you get your pre-op plan.  I don't think it will speed things up tho - that is up to the insurance company, etc.  Good luck.

Why not call your Surgeons office and ask if you can get weighed there, quickly. That way, if you have to lose a certain amount before surgery, getting the weigh in done there will make anything you lose in these next weeks count toward your total weight loss. :)

After going to my seminar last week I started making changes. I've gone caffeine free, no sodas even sprite. Also no fast food, and one Protien shake a day. My surgeon doesn't require any weight loss to have surgery, but I want to start changing now since this is going to be a life change. I swear I am eating smaller meals already and feeling fuller faster. But I have also been eating protien rich, non fatty foods also. I would say wait to find out if you have to lose any weight beofre you have surgery. I've lost 6 pounds already in a week with my changes. Just to be sure the weight loss won't make it harder for you.

I don't know anything about the hoops as I was a self-pay, but the day I signed up to OH (the day I officially decided to do the VSG) was the day I started getting myself healthier in prep for the surgery. I stopped drinking, stopped caffeine, started eating healthy and started doing some walking. I lost 10lbs before my week long pre-op diet. I think it can only do good to get yourself into a healthier habit now. Good luck!
