Help! Should l start a pre-op diet NOW, even though l haven't even seen the surgeon yet?
I have been keeping a food diary and working with a support group here for 6 months now. Definetly get rid of all bad foods as soon as you make your decision to have the surgery.
I am doing a liquid diet 2 weeks before the surgery, as planned by my Doctor.
Plan it with your Doctor though, as stopping everything suddenly can sometimes through sugar levels and sodium levels out of whack.

Does your insurance require a 3- or 6-month medically supervised weight loss program? Many do, and if yours does, I would start that ASAP.
I did not have to do a liver-shrinking diet immediately pre-op, nor did my surgeon require me to lose a certain amount of weight, so I can't help you with that.

I would check with your insurance company - call them and ask what prerequisites are required for WLS approval. If a supervised weight loss program is required, you want to get that started ASAP, even if you haven't even chosen a surgeon yet, as this is separate from the surgeon. If a supervised diet is required, and you start it on your own without seeing any kind of doctor, dietician, etc., then the time you spend dieting right now will not count toward the diet if one is required.
I found out my insurance required a 6-month medically supervised weight loss attempt/diet, so I started that ASAP with my PCP. By the time I met with my surgeon, I only had 2 more months left of the required diet, so things moved along much more quickly than if I'd waited and started that program after I met with the surgeon.
