Question about carbs
Stephanie, good for you on helping your grandson become a healthier/happier person. I have a 9 year old grand daughter (96 lbs) that I'm going through this with as well. She asked me to help her lose weight because of the issues she is having with other kids at her school. They can be soooo brutal!! Thankfully her mother is in the picture and we are working together to help her eat healthier along with exercise. I told her she is NOT on a diet (trying to nip that word in the bud!) but learning to be healthier. She is learning about eating in moderation along with reading nutritional facts and measuring/counting out portion sizes. We walk, ride bikes or swim most every day. She has lost 4 lbs in the past month and her mom has lost 25 lbs. They are both amazed at what healthy eating along with exercise is doing for them. They both seem to laugh/smile alot! Good luck with your grandson! Hopefully changing his relationship with food now will help him become a happier/healthier person in the long run!!

I just looked the product up online - is this what you bought? The front of the box I see says "5 grams NET carbs." They get this number by starting with 9 total grams, minus 2g sugar alcohols and minus 2g fiber.

Serving Size: 1 Bar | Servings Per Container: 6 |
AMOUNT PER SERVING | |
Calories | 170 |
Total fat | 15g |
Saturated fat | 11g |
Trans fat | 0g |
Cholesterol | 15mg |
Sodium | 45mg |
Total Carbohydrates | 9g |
Dietary fiber | 2g |
Sugars | 5g |
Sugar Alcohol | 2g |
Protein | 2g |
Vitamin A | 4% |
Vitamin C | 0% |
Calcium | 35% |
Iron | 0% |
Yes, that is the product we bought. So if I am understanding this riight, we take the 9 grams of carbs and subtract the sugars? So should I count it as 9 grams for his daily carbs or 5grams? I am really confused by all this addition and subtraction. I will have to address this with the NUT I guess. Thanks for your help.

No, I never said to subtract sugars. If you're counting NET carbs, then you subtract fiber and sugar alcohols, which are broken out separately under the total carbohydrates.
Definitely ask the nut. Some folks count total carbs, some count net carbs, and there are differing ways to get to the net carb number (always subtract fiber, but some folks don't subtract sugar alcohols while others do, and some only subtract half of sugar alcohols because they can often still have some impact on glucose/insulin levels). Personally, I count all carbs because I use an online tracker (My Daily Plate at livestrong.com) that does not give me the option to calculate net carbs.
