why can't you just diet and exercise...

I know most of you that have told ppl about the surgery have gotten this, but I have to say overall I have been very lucky. My coworkers, Mom, Hubby...friends, they all support me. The most negative I have gotten is people wondering why I want to do this before I am done having kids...and my MIL is not all gung-ho about it because she is one that thinks its does not resolve underlying food issues....but today...

my moms estranged husband said those dreaded words"Why can't you just diet and exercise?"
UGH! I know I know...we have all been there, but I finally heard them...and to be honest it just made me want to roll my eyes at him!

It must be hard for that person to go through life and be so perfect.  The only perfect people I seem to know are the perfect aholes.  Ignore the idiots and focus on the positive!  Go girl!

I must admit - that walking around the nurses station the second night after my surgery I was saying to myself: "this was SO not worth it" - but deep in my heart I knew I was not going to be able to lose the weight I needed to lose without the surgery.  It's so very, very easy for someone ELSE to tell you that you should just diet and exercise  - they're just idiots - blow 'em off!
You do what YOU need to do.

And I know this is sort of a little too little too late or 20/20 hindsight whatever you wanna call it but you may want to be a little more selective about who you tell.  Was this dickweed usually a supportive kind of person and this comment came out of the blue?

My guess is that there is a reason he's your mom's estranged husband.  You do what is right for you and don't worry about the rude comments from ignorant people.

Always the best wishes, Sue

Aah, I see...so sorry :(

Like someone else said there's a good reason he's estranged!  I haven't even told my own mother but we are like oil & water and she would have already told you by now and you don't even know her....THAT's  how big how her mouth is!!

If JUST diet and exercise worked, there would be no such thing as WLS. Ignorant people are sure stupid. lol

My answer:

Diet and exercise work.  There is no doubt..  Unfortunately, diet and exercise ALONE only work in the long-term for a very small fraction of people - perhaps 5% or less based studies cited by the NIH. Are you willing to bet your life for 20-1 odds?  I'm not, that's why I chose surgery.  I am 'doing it' with Diet and Exercise -- a restricted calorie, low carb diet to be exact and intense exercise.  VSG just makes the diet more realistic long-term.
