Just wondering if getting a hernia is as common as having your gallbladder out. also wondering if there is a time line of getting a hernia or could it happen even after a year out?
My surgeon gave me the tool. Now it is up to me to use it right.

Not very common with lap surgery, stats somewhere around 3% if I recall right, and most are within a year after surgery. Open surgery has a higher risk of hernias.

Hi Valerie,

I am having surgery on July 27.  Not only am I having my VSG done, I am also having my gallbladder removed and I have a hernia that needs repairing.

My surgeon told me it is common for overweight people to get hernia's from the pressure of their stomach pushing upwards into their diaphragm.  And the gallbladder issues are due to rapid weight loss.  I have lost almost 50 pounds pre-op since November 30.  And my gallbladder has decided to act up now.  I am kind of glad about it so I don't have to go back into surgery a year later.

I don't know if this answers your question or now, just thought I would share my experience.

Sheila

I had my gallbladder out when i was 7 months out of surgery. I just hope hernias are not like gallbladders they just come when ever they want to. thanks for sharing.

Are you asking about hiatial hernias or incisional hernias?

incisions hernias or just getting a hernia is it like a gallbladder because it seems everyone gets there gallbladder removed but I do not here much about hernias. I have to have a Hysterectomy in August and he will be going threw my belly button again. This will be the 4Th time going in my belly button.
I am worried about this.

My surgeon gave me the tool. Now it is up to me to use it right.

No, incision hernias are really, really uncommon with the lap incisions.. very small, about 3% or less.. but since it's the same spot used a few times I'd ask the Dr anyway.. The gallbladder thing is common if you don't take a med called Ursodiol or Actigall (urso is the generic name)... GB problems are usually in the range of about 30% without the med, it's reduced to about 3% if you take Actigall during the fast weight loss period (about 6mo.)
