Did you get a catheter before surgery?

I know this seems like a stupid question... it kinda freaks me out needing a catheter though. I hope I won't need one. By the way, if anyone has the time and/or energy, I was wondering what I can really expect when I get to the hospital. My surgery is scheduled Aug 4th and I'd love to not run into any major surprises when I get there. Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I haven't had my sleeve yet, but I have had 3 C-sections and all 3 times I was cathed on the operating table. It's not a very comfortable experience, so they like to take care of that once you are already sedated.

I wasnt catheterized at all, I'm sure you can talk to your surgeon about it and see if you are going to need one. If you do, you should ask if they can do it once you are sedated. Good Luck!

I think I requested with the surgeon to specifically not get one and I never had one. Was able to get up and move around post op to pee no problem..just the heaviness in the abdomen but nothing you cant handle..talk with your surgeon and request no urinary catheter..

my mom is a nurse and does see people get infections from them or pain because they are put in incorrectly (not by her!) so we were against it if it was possible..

post op you will probably be nauseous..i woke up dry heaving..and dry heaving post op SUCKKKS!! request anti nausea meds before hand and make sure they give them to you like clock work post op..also use your pain pump! i believe in pain management so use your pain meds before you start to feel crummy..the crummier you feel the less you will want to sip..its a vicious cycle...there is nothing wrong using the prescribed pain meds. i went home with 2mg dilaudid as i requested because percocet make me itch like a crackhead..

pain med and anesthesia make you constipated, talk to your doc about starting a stool softener like colace pre op and use it every day post op as directed..not going for a while is normal..

They put a catheter and a breathing tube in after I was sedated, but they took the tube out before I woke up. The catheter was in until the next morning, and was super painless to remove. For the ladies, I saw someone else describe it as "removing a lubed-up tampon" and I could not agree more. Totally easy.

I actually preferred having the catheter in that first night because I was super sleepy and it was hard to move. Plus the nurses at my hospital sucked so I probably would've had to wait 20 minutes for them to answer my call button so they could help me to the bathroom anyway.

They put one in me when I was out cold. When the surgery was over they took it out before I was awake. So I was told. I do not remember it. And did not have any pain from it.
My surgeon gave me the tool. Now it is up to me to use it right.
