because I am a nurse, and should probably know where to find this information buuuut....

where do I find out more information about my surgeon. I want to know his death rate/infection rate/ any investigations and lawsuits. I have sent an email to the office asking this, but I want to see what I can find for myself.

(Ive searched a lot around here but cannot seem to find much-which might be a good thing lol)

My surgeon gave that information on his own during the initial seminar and again during my first appointment with him before my surgery.

I don't think it's a stupid question at all... and I'm also a RN.  While legal issues may be easier to chase down by looking at your state's medical board webpages, death and infection rate, etc. are much harder to come by.

My surgeon also gave information at the seminar, but I'm going much more by what I didn't find on him, and by word of mouth reputation (excellent references from people who have nothing to gain by recommending him) than what he himself said.  I'm glad he 'fessed up for the one death he's had during bariatric surgery, and the one huge complication he had that didn't result in death.  But there's more to researching than going just by what the surgeon says.

We had a bad apple for a local physician *****cently went to prison.  He's had charges filed on him over the past several years ranging from sexual abuse of a minor (not in the office setting) to embezzlement of his disabled father's monetary funds.  Our hospital continued to let him practice after several nurses filed sexual harassment complaints (guess who went - the nurses of course- and he stayed).  But when I search online for his dirty deeds, I don't find much of anything other than one write-up in an online newspaper!

One thing, some of the posters on the DS board really seem to be old-timers at ferreting out the bad seeds performing their surgery.  Maybe you could post there and see if they'll give some feedback on how to search.

All the above advice is good. I found this site:

Put your doctors information and see what comes up.

You would have to ask him for his statistics.  My surgeon provided them during the initial seminar.

I would go to your state Board of Medicine.  It should have a search feature, like the board of nursing, where you can look up his name and see if any issues have been reported to them.  As far as lawsuits, I'm not sure.

Good luck!

Paige, You're in FL right?  you can go to the Florida Department of Financial Services and search professional liability closed claims by the physician's name -- this will give you any REPORTED malpractice claims (basically if the claim went all the way to the litigation stage).  I think its www.fldfs.com.  You can also check on the Department of Health practitioner profile page
http://ww2.doh.state.fl.us/IRM00profiling/searchform.ASP which will give you a profile page stating the doctor's background info (schooling, licensure, disciplines, malpractice claims, etc) and you can also request a copy of the Drs file from DOH via mail (this does take about a month, however).  Also check the court records for the area the Dr is licensed in (i.e. Alachua County).  Make sure when you search on FLDFS or court records that you search for the physician by his name and also the name of the practice, if applicable.
As far as mortality/morbidity and infection rates, etc -- if that exists, I haven't been able to find it yet!   you might also try just googling his name and going thru whatever turns up -- just consider the source of what you find (or don't).
I am also an RN but now work as a nurse paralegal for an insurance defense firm -- I use these sites all of the time for "dirt" on people :)'.  If you want to PM me the Doctor's name(s) to see if I can locate anything for you, I'd be glad to look.
