 What is the drain everyone talks about??? ?  Is in normal to have 1????  I never saw one in recovery, in my room, any time??? Does not everyone get 1???? Thanks kerry

Oh be thankful!  It is a JP drain (I have no clue what JP stands for).  It is a long tube that runs along the stomach and it drains into an external bulb that is a bit smaller than a hand grenade!  My surgeon stitched the tube to me and for 10 days after surgery, I had this thing hanging from me.  I had to keep bandages around it as well.  I guess the tube is pretty long inside since it took him a second or two of pulling to get it all out.  Yuck!  I had to empty the hand grenade twice a day and record the measurements so he knew it was okay to remove.  It actually caused a fair amount of pain on my left side while it was in.  It is much better since he removed it.
