Question for the Vet's about carbs!

Alright all you been there done that VSG Guru's.... I just had my 2 month follow up with surgeon/nut.  My Nut said I should be eating over 100 grams of carbs a day!  He also said that being in ketosis is not good.     Any ideas why they might say that?  Also my nut. goes by an exchange system not an actual number system.  Currently I am at 6-800 cals, less than 40 carbs, less than 30 fats, and 70-100 grams protein. This feels like it is working since I am down 40 lbs in 2 months!

They want me to get to 1200 cals eating - 6 meats, 4 dairy, 2 vegs, 2 fruits, 3-4 starches, 3 fats.

Can you all give me insight on what your numbers looked like during the 2-6 month phase?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Personally, I dont feel that being in ketosis is bad. it means that your body is burning fat for fuel instead of carbs. I am extremely carb sensitive and this is the only way I lose. I eat 10-15 carbs per day. 1200 calories is excessive in my opinion for two months out.

I eat approx 900 calories a day. all protien. little to no carbs. 80-90 oz of water daily. I also work out 3-4 x a week for over an hour so my calorie intake is higher at 3 months than it was at 2 months. I dont know what to tell you, but does your Nut work with Bariatric patients at all? It doesnt sound like it to me...

Hope this helps,

Blake

I think your nut si going for a balanced diet... which may be nice to get to at the end of your losing phase
if you feel what your doing is working and your not struggling then id prob continue to do it, why fix whats not broken? when you get to goal you can then start playing around with more carbs (but this is my opinion only)

i think its up to you to decide if you want to follow your nuts plan or keep doing what your doing.. alot of us vets did what your doing now, and have had no medical issues doing it til we got to goal..

The reason (IMO) why they may say that about carbs and ketosis is that they are not current in their education.. There are so many NUTs whose plans are just waaaay out there, and this sounds like one, sorry- but I would deviate onto your own path as long as it's working for you.

My plan per my NUT/surgeon does not change till I hit goal, however long it takes me, it is and has been 600-800 cals, under 40g carbs (I trim back to around 20) and 70+ protein.. fats in a healthy moderation, I don't count them, but I don't drink bacon fat either!

I regularly hit about the high 600's cal wise and still am losing, not fast, but losing none the less.. At goal/maintenance I am instructed to hit 1200 cals, and up the healthy fats and carbs slowly till I find my balance.. but 1200cals is for maintenance, not losing.. I can guarantee unless I became a work-out fanatic I would not lose well at 1200 cals if at all, it would probably happen but would be painfully slow..

I'm not risking it, and my Dr who has very good stats of %EWL has a plan that seems to work, so that's what I'm following. I would take a look around here at what others who have hit goal have done, and make an educated decision to veer off your NUTs eating plan..

For me..I was always in ketosis. I ate very few carbs just because I was so concerned about my protein and water. Protein and water and some vegis were all I had room for so I didn't eat carbs, really, at all.  I lost it extremely fast the first 4 months. I started introducing carbs at about 4 months and the weight loss slowed big time, which, honestly, was okay with me. I had lost so much, so fast, I was concerned.  But, from what I'm finding out now, the major ketosis had a lot to do with the major hair loss I'm going through now, so perhaps your doctor is on to something. A good balance in life (and food) is probably your best choice.  Don't get me wrong. I'm happy about my new body and my choice of surgery but I wish I had handled my diet a little differently the first 4 months. I am sure it will all repair itself eventually but it is better to not throw off the balance from the get go.

Don't fret about the hair thing, ketosis didn't cause it.
You shocked your body in several ways, surgery and weight loss- almost everyone will lose a good amount of hair- telogen effluvium.. heck, when I last lost a lot of weight (not low-carbing) I lost a ton of hair. It slows down and stops usually 3-4mo after it first starts falling out.. and then you get to deal with all the little sprouts sticking up as it grows back in.. but it had nothing to do with ketosis.

I'm 47 and I've always heard all my life that ketosis is bad and you have to eat a balanced diet and never ever go below 1200 calories. But now I'm learning that is all changing for weight loss surgery patients.

I really don't know what makes us different from regular people other than the amount of food we can physically eat, but for some reason the under 800 calories, low carb diet is what seems to work for many people. I figure I'll try to lose as fast as I can while the restriction is good and the novelty of it all is still there. After goal I can fix whatever I broke (I hope). By that I mean my metabolism. I'm sure it goes down eating so few calories but with exercise and plenty of protein maybe not very much.

The older nuts used to tell us that we could damage our metabolism by being in ketosis and eating too little. But now I think that is changing. I would keep doing what you're doing since it's working. I'm eating between 700-900 calories and under 40 carbs. Some days I mess up and eat something that I didn't know had so many carbs in it but I am learning. The most I have done is about 55. I really can't imagine eating 100.

100 g of carbs is to high, like most of the vets here are on the same page here. during my journey i  stuck to 600-800 cal and under 40 g of carbs a day. hey i've lost 200 lbs so far it worked for me. my nut wants me to get 80 g of carbs a day most nuts want you to eat a balance diet. that might be ok for the average person but we're not the average.

Thanks everyone for your input!  My surgeon is one of the best in his field but I really don't care for the nutritionist.  he is young but thin and doesn't fully understand the losing phase!   So I agree with you all - if it's not broke don't fix it - i will keep plugging along and if the weight loss stops then I can re-evaluate!

I know that everyone here will disagree with your nut and say no, no, no.. but I think that looks like a very balanced diet personally.. and it sort of resembled mine. You have to decide if you trust your nut or the vets here (aside from me I mean, lol)..

anyway.. I just read that you already decided to disregard your nut.. so never mind.. lol

I am still loving life with my sleeve! Been maintaining at or below goal for over 4 years!
