need leads on great mexican doctors
Thank you all so much for giving me these leads. Hopefully with my research I am able to pick a great doctor in Mexico. I am really excited and kinda of nervous. Nervous because i will be traveling alone but it's my time to live. I have live for my kids, my husband, my family and my friends. I just want to make myself a priority.
My top picks, after extensive research, was Alvarez, Aceves and Joya. I went to Dr. Alvarez, and I went alone. I told Susan, his patient coordinator, that I was going alone and was nervous. It took her only a few weeks and she emailed me with the name and email of a gal who was also traveling alone and wanted a sleeve sister. Quite frankly, we had so much fun when we met (of course we knew a lot about one another from emailing back and forth), it felt more like a vacation rather than going for life-changing surgery. It was definitely nice to have someone to walk the halls with!
Good luck with your decision!!

NOTE: With any Doctor from Mexico you want to make sure that you have a back-up plan for anything that may happen when you get home. Make sure your Primary Care Physician (PCP) is on-board with your surgery. Many doctors don't even know what VSG is. Some doctors will not treat you if you went to another doctor and they will refer you to the Emergency Room. In the case of Dr. Alvarez, he gives you a summary of what he did in writing on discharge. I carried these papers with me everywhere (I still have them in my computer bag). He will also talk with your Doctor and answer any questions they may have on how to treat you in the event of a problem.

There are a bunch of us here who used Dr Kelly and loved him. Not only are he and the entire staff top notch, he is a lot less expensive than the "big names", who in my opinion are able to charge more because they advertise more and use fancier hospitals thus creating the impression they are 'better'. Not that they aren't great, but I don't see paying twice as much for ---what? However, if paying more and being in a brand new hospital makes you feel less anxious, go to Aceves or Alvarez. (Sorry, these comments have the wrong tone online. I don't mean to imply there is anything actually bad about these surgeons!)I also see Dr Joya has lowered his price a bit and he also has a fine reputation. There ARE some MX docs who don't have as good a record though, watch out for those.

ETA, Dr Kelly is $5500 or so, runs specials sometimes. That includes everything but the flight out and a hotel in San Diego if you stay there the night before. . I can't say about any other surgeons for sure, but with Dr Kelly your travel partner gets a full sized bed, not hospital type, right in the room with you, and they eat free at the hospital.
