Are beans a good food choice?

I've been eating a lot of beans lately.  Throw a bag in the crock pot and let it cook all day.  Meals for days!!  Would beans...like Northern or Navy be considered a dense protein?  Thanks, Cathi

Google protein tracker. There are many good sites that are free that you can use to track protein in foods like beans.

i avoided them for the most part, especially during losing..they have fiber, and nutrients which are good and are essentially healthy but are high in carbs...in theory it really would be better and much higher protein if you were eating actual meat.

instead of beans in the crockpot try pork chops or stew meat if you are looking for a crockpot meal..

but thats just my 2 cents..now that im more in maintenance i do love making a pot of blakc bean soup..but i make sure to add alot of ham so i get that protein on top of the beans..

they definitely are not dense protein, you can eat more beans than dense protein such as meat

In my opinion, no, beans are not a good source of protein during the losing phase.  You really want to stick with dense protein and fewer carbs.  They will go through you faster and leave you hungrier.

Thanks for this question, and for the answers, I was wondering this myself because I just made a pot of taco soup that has a ton of beans in it, and then I saw that beans have a ton of carbs, so I was curious as well.

Just out of curiosity though, what were some of your go to foods, when you could eat somewhat normal foods??

I asked the NUT about beans at my 2 week post op the other day.  She said that the amount I would have to eat to get enough protein would be too much and way too high in carbs, along with it's infamous gassy problems.

Beans aren't a particularly dense protein, and they normally have to be accompanied by something else like rice that adds the missing amino acids to make a complete protein (rice and beans as complementary dishes didn't evolve that way without a reason!) so they aren't a particularly efficient way of getting your protein and lose weight at the same time, but they do have their place in a normal balanced diet (which few of us are on during this weight loss period.) That said, I will throw some beans into the mix at times - some black beans into my salads or lower sugar BBQ or baked beans along with some steak or pork tenderloin - but it's a small amount relative to the primary protein component of the meal.

Thanks everyone!  My weight loss has been consistently good.  I will be 2 months out the 12th and have lost almost 40lbs.  I think I've been afraid to branch out some and the beans go down so easy.  So far I have tried tuna salad, chicken, string cheese, lunch meat, shrimp, crab, scrambled eggs and lots of Wendy's chili.  I tried a pork chop once and it was either to dry or i ate it to fast, but i felt like i was going to die!  Guess its time to branch out some.  Cathi
