Out of curiousity..

So I keep hearing about the whole *leaky pouch* thing and how you can get one if you're not careful the 1st few weeks etc etc so I'm curious.. how would you know if you have a leaky pouch? Has anyone had one? What did you eat in order to cause it? If what I'm eating isnt causing pain then I should be pretty safe right? Wouldnt that hurt like crazy if I was eating enough to make my pouch leak?

Any information is appreciated, I'm really just curious and also want to arm myself with some helpful and REAL information of the *what ifs*

Thanks in advance everyone :)

A leak is a VERY serious medical condition and you would need to see a doctor immediately.

From what I have read - leaks are usually accompanied by fever, unable to keep fluids down, pain, etc.

I personally have never read of something being eaten and causing it - not to say it hasn't occured but I have never heard of it.  A leak is generally the result of a problem during surgery.  There are certain locations that are difficult to staple and that is where leaks often occur if they are not done correctly.

I guess what I am saying is that its not about what you eat afterwards.  If you get a leak - it was likely there ever since surgery.  You need to follow your surgeon's plan to a T after you leave the hospital and you will be fine.

Personally - I don't think it is POSSIBLE with the amount of swelling/healing going on right after a sleeve to eat enough to bust the staple line.  Someone correct me if I am completely wrong - but 99% of people I see on here are sipping 1-2 oz of liquid for the first few days.  Not eating food at all.

Just because it doesn't hurt, doesn't mean your stomach isn't irritated. The nerves in the stomach are cut, stapled off, and have been traumatized. So, just because there isn't pain doesn't mean it's okay to eat whatever, your stomach may not feel anything. Eating isn't conducive to proper healing of a staple line. Leaks happen typically during surgery, or immediately following surgery just as Sean described. The catch is that you shouldn't put anything in there because it can irritate the stomach, cause vomiting which in turn puts stress on a healing staple.

And, we don't have pouches. We have a stomach. I had a leak that was detected 2 days post-op on my final leak test. I was a revision patient, and the leak was a direct result of the damage the band had caused to my stomach. I hadn't eaten anything.

You don't want to eat anything with chunks or bits since they can get caught in the staple line and cause more problems.

Symptoms of a leak are typically pain, vomiting, fever, racing heart rate, nausea.

For starters congratulations on your recent surgery.
I dont know about leaks because I never had one.
I have only heard about them.

Just stay on your clears for at least the first two weeks.
Dont try and eat early out like some are now doing around here.
You just had major surgery......

again, congratulations!

USAF Wife, I had a revision from band to sleeve also, which is mostly where my concern is coming from. My Dr said the surgery went well and there wasnt any issues because of my band BUT I've read others who have had issues going from one to the other so its raised my curiousity on informing myself so thank you for the info. I'm a week out tomorrow and dont think I've eaten anything to be cause for concern.. some thin fruit smoothie/protien shakes (I added berries but extra skim milk to thin everything out, I drank ut through a straw without a problem) I've also had some cream soups (once) and a couple bites of pretty thin potatoes that I was feeding my 8 month old (I always take a couple bites to be sure they're thin/cool enough for her to eat) the rest has been the normal yogurt, protien shakes, water, jello etc. If you think any of that is an issue please let me know. Also how long should I stay off anything with bits? My Dr said only 2 weeks but I'm curious as to what your opinion of that is since you've been through this. And lastly how did they test your staple line for leaks after surgery and how did you find out you had a leak? I dont think I do, I mean I feel fine outside of being a little dizzy once in a while but I think thats just the lack of calories etc.

Thanks again for all the information everyone!! This forum has been a great help these 1st few days! :)
