your reasons for having the VSG

Hi all.. I'm scheduled to meet with my surgeon and I'm really wanting the VSG rather than the RNY. I have some health issues that makes me feel this is the better option for me, but I know ultimately it's up to the doctor.
I have endometriosis and have been battling anemia for years because of it. I know that with the RNY you have a greater chance of low iron and I don't want to add to my problem.. plus my mother has rheumathoid arthritis as did my grandmother and one of my aunts.. the only thing my mom's been able to take to help alleviate her pain are NSAIDS nothing else touches it so I worry about my future should I have to deal with that as well.

What were your reasons or your doc's reasons that made you have to get the VSG and would you consider it a success for you so far?

The choice on what surgery you have should be yours. I would suggest you change doctors if you have to. Your reasons for wanting VSG are all valid.
My reasons for having VSG:
Being around to watch my grandchildren grow up
Reducing my risk for Type II Diabetes
Reducing my risk for high blood pressure
And the most important one - feeling like I "fit" into life better. I am able to do anything I set my mind to.

I should have clarified sorry.. the reason I say it's the doc's decision is cuz I'm in Ontario Canada and our surgeries here are covered by OHIP.. there's no way I could ever pay for wls myself and our insurance doesn't cover it either. So.. OHIP has RNY as the Gold Standard and you have to really fight to get the VSG, but if your surgeon thinks it's beneficial then he pretty much tells OHIP how it is and they ok it.

Ruby, I think your logic is right-on.
You are thinking practically and for the long-term. I cannot see how any doctor would disagree with what you've stated here.
I am not familiar with the Canadian system but from what you've said, if you can get the doc on board, s/he will go to bat for you.
My reasons for VSG...well, I looked at the band initially, then thought about the sleeve, then decided on RNY for about 5 minutes. (LOL)
Then I really sat down and researched and asked for feedback from someone I actually work with who had the VSG and who has shrunk before my eyes. She lost 150 lbs with the sleeve and has become a new woman-inside and out...she has blossomed!
My BMI was lower, about 36, but my BP was climbing sporadically, I had hip pain, I hadn't slept in months due to snoring and, I believe, sleep apnea (I would have done the sleep study if insurance had denied me). My husband had moved out of our bedroom because I was keeping him awake all night also. I was miserable and felt like a failure everyday.
I was afraid that one night, I would fail to wake up with a gasp and just die in the bed. No, I was not SUPER obese but still, waking up gasping for air is friggin terrifying.
So, now I am 5 months out, have lost 74 lbs, I walk and jog most days. I sleep at night, feel rested in the morning, my last BPon Friday morning was 106/66 and I have renewed hope for the future and faith in myself. I know that I will be around for my daughter for a long time.
People do not recognize me who have not seen me in a few months...I also went from being a redhead to a platinum blonde!
I would DEFINITELY, 100%, without a doubt, consider it a success, because I made it so!
I have followed my surgeon's orders, I do not drink during, 30 minutes before or after eating, I stick with high protein, low carb foods and try to get in healthy fats. I allow myself a little something now and then, which is still within my plan....sugar free and very small (TCBY or a sugar free peppermint patty). I walk briskly pushing my 3 year old in the jogging stroller most mornings and I jog certain areas of the trail. On weekends, I go out by myself for a run on the same trail and I usually can jog about 80% of it...there are some very steep hills but I'm working on those!
You sound like a woman who knows where she is heading and how she wants to get there. You've done your research and have thought about your options. Some people just put themselves at the mercy of a surgeon their PCP may have referred them to and may not have put as much thought into this process as you have.
So, surgeries can fail and people can fail at sticking to "the plan." I think there is a huge distinction there. My sleeve is a tool that I need to take care of so it will continue to take care of me.
March right in there and lay it all out on the table!
Stay strong and let us know how it goes.
Best wishes and good luck!
