I admit it! I am embarrased to go to the gym. However a while ago I did curves and it wasnt bad. Most everyone in there was out of shape women ;) So has anyone done Curves as their exercise? Was it effective for you?

I don't but my mom did after her WLS. She LOVED it and it was effective for her.

I'm not embarrassed to go to the gym really...I'm just very intimidated by it on multiple levels. The fitness junkies, the lack of knowledge about the machines, etc.

I've been going to Curves for about 6 months.  I was very out of shape when I started, so I thought it would be easier to start there.  Last month, I tried out a 'real' gym and pulled my back muscles during the first workout.  So, back to Curves, as it is an easier workout.

If you can join as a Month to Month payment instead of a contract, you might try it.  Then when you feel more in shape, you could see about joining a gym if you want.

I think Curves is better than no exercise; it is a lighter weight workout than a trainer will give you at a gym.

I had done Curves awhile ago (and I'm still pre-op so I'm still an out-of-shape woman!  ****il the branch I went to just up and closed one day. Seriously...parked, walked up..and there was a 'closed' sign. (Took me 3 months to get them to STOP billing my credit card too, but that's another story). Curves did work for me for awhile, but I seemed to plateau after about 2-3 months. I had to start doing more and more circuits to push through it.

I go to Planet Fitness now - mostly because it's affordable at $10/month with (I think) a $39 annual 'lock in' fee. I met with a personal trainer there last week (included in membership cost) and he set me up on the most intense, thorough exercise program anyone has given me in my life. I've done 2 days of the 4-day workout he's given me, and while it was grueling and intense...I didn't hurt as much as I thought I would. Tomorrow is 45 minutes of cardio sandwiching a legs routine, so we'll see if I have that same opinion on Tuesday morning.. LOL

As far as embarassment....for Planet Fitness, there are all sizes, shapes, and ages of people who go there. I've been to two different branches, and depending on the time of day I've gone, the gym is so big that you can manage a whole workout without having to be near another person. Good luck to you!!!

I come from a family of women.   Fit women for the most part, (never had weight issues or health issues) but of a generation where daily exercise just was not the norm.  I have three aunts and my mom all within 3 years of 70.  one of my aunts started going to curves around 4 years ago.  i now know just how valuable exercise can be.  this aunt has ten times more energy than my others including my mom.  she seems younger, she is stronger, her outlook is different and when we go shopping I'm not slowing down the pace for her. She choose curves because she was embarrassed about not knowing gym etiquette and she didn't want to be the oldest or most out of shape woman in the room.  I also think that she didn't want to look foolish in front of men since curves seems to have almost all women as clients. Whatever form of exercise you choose to do, do it in an environment in which you feel comfortable.  Getting there is the real ***** of the exercise.  Good luck
