2 week liquid diet -need assurance
I once asked a friend of mine that had the sleeve done 3 years ago how the liquid diet was after surgery. She said it SUCKED! She said it was major culture shock that she could no longer eat whatever she wanted. She shared with me that she wished that she had done what the Dr. told her to do the weeks before her surgery to prepare her body for the change. She said it hurt to sip water. She said she went through short period of time wondering "what in the hell have I done to myself?" She eventually had great success. She went from being a 3x to an XSmall.
So my question is,,,,,how did you make it through your two weeks of liquids post op? I had a BMI of 36 starting out in July. I have been able to maintain that at my Dr's request in order to get insurance to approve. I have tried really hard to eat right...Protein first, cut out carbs etc....but I really struggle with it. I've tried to keep it in my head that if I get my body used to it now, it will be easier after surgery. I've not been able to do it completely. I have major ups and downs. Can you share your experience with this. I am so worried about the liquid diet!! My sleeve is scheduled for Dec 27th and I'm worried I've not cut back enough to get ready for it. Just like I've done my whole life, I get up every day and try to eat right, just not perfect at it!

Try to relax honey. Take it day by day. I'm 17 days post op and doing well. The first week is the hardest. But you want to focus on your recovery. Getting enough sleep, take your pain meds, sip water, then broths, then protein shakes. If you sip and don't gulp it won't hurt. Believe me you won't be hungry at all. You will miss the food emotionally but not physically. Just getting down water and a couple of shakes will take you most of the day. Give yourself two whole weeks to feel better.
When a went to see my doctor he told me to start drinking shakes for breakfast and lunch and eat a sensible dinner. I don't even have a surgery date yet but started the very next day. I have been on this diet for 11 days now and hope to get a call in the next day or two with a date, which will no doubt be another week or two before the surgery. i have had a couple bad days where i was really hungry but just pu**** out of my mind. it is hard right now because of the holidays and parties. however, do what your doctor says!. i was VERY anxious abut the liquid diet and wondering if i could or would be able to do it. I have done very well. just take it day by day and your surgery date will be here before you know it! good luck to you. keep in touch!
I found it easier to take it one day at a time. Instead of thinking I had 10 days of liquid diet, each day I'd get up and say to myself "today is a liquid day". Only the first few days are hard, after that, it wasn't bad. It only hurts to sip early on. It's easier as the swelling goes down. I never had any regrets or wondering why I did it to myself. I read enough ahead of time to know what to expect and that the difficult and uncomfortable aspects of the surgery were only temporary. Keep your eye on the prize! I made it to goal in 6.5 months and have maintained under my goal since June. I can eat whatever I want, just in smaller portions. The only thing I don't really bother with is high carb drinks. They just aren't "worthy" to me.
One thing I highly recommend prior to surgery is to start practicing taking smaller bites, chewing thoroughly, eating slowly. It helps a lot once you get back to regular foods.
Focus on the positive! Good luck!

I too struggled during my 6 month process that started this past June. Even though I had decided to definitely "do this" I was still not committing with the food or the exercise. It was almost like I was holidng on to all of my food goodies and wasn't ready to say good-bye to them. My psychologist ( an eating disorder specialist) has been a crucial part of my success so far! I had my pre-op appt on November 1st and decided that THIS WOULD BE THE DAY that I would start eating smaller portions and healthier choices then the foods I had been eating regularly AND START EXERCISING! I lost 12lbs in 5 weeks and felt GREAT! I got approval quickly from my insurance but didn't set my surgery date until December 20th as I wanted more time to lose weight pre-surgery...my goal is to lose 25lbs by my surgery date on the 20th.
I'm on my 4th day of liquids (pre-surgery) and I'm doing EVERYTHING the exact way I expect to do it after surgery on the 20th. The only thing I craved on the first day were salads...I have been eating them everyday since Nov 1st but other then that I'm pretty satisfied with the protein shakes and I still have the energy to exercise in the mornings too!!! And I'm not craving ANYTHING 4 days into this which has been a blessing!! I'm sipping exactly like I will be sipping after surgery to get in the practice of it and it is challenging to get the water in but I just make myself think about it and I JUST GET IT DONE!
Oh yeah and I've lost a total now of 17lbs...just 8lbs away from my pre-surgery goal so I'm on track to achieve this goal as well!!
No worries, we'll both do GREAT!
Joyfully,
Maria

One day at a time. You are stressing yourself. Cut that out. Be kind to yourself and try to prepare yourself mentally for a long-term process. Each day you just keep going.
However, it doesn't make sense to think that you can eat the same pre-surgery as you will post-surgery. If that was the case, you wouldn't need the surgery.
Follow your doctors instructions, know that there is a purpose for everything, and focus on your goals. Don't over analyze.

I think you are a few steps ahead of where I (and probably most of us if we are being honest) were. I totally ignored most of the advice about this phase. Oh, I had it all down on paper, but I didn't really understand... until day 3 when I had a complete meltdown of "why did I do this?" and felt sorry for myself. It's okay. You'll get through it... you want to know why? Because you have NO CHOICE but to get through it. There's no other option. ((HUGS)) You'll do great... keep going!

YES This is what I keep thinking...but couldn't put it into words! I need help. The surgery is the tool that I need!
Thanks to all who have replied. This board has helped me so much. I always feel like I have a place to go and someone to fall back on. It feels good that I have a good solid plan in place and I'm no longer running to the Weight Dr. to get diet pills to fulfill this need. I'm on my way to a healthier everything!!!
Thanks again:)
