My extreme hair loss experience...

I have suffered from hair loss for about 15 years.  I have been wearing a hair system (hair piece) for about 5 years.  I would say my presurgery hair volume was similar to your hair presurgery.  My hair was once soooo much thicker, so I went ahead with the hair system.  Since surgery mine is very similar to yours.  It is so thin on top that I don't know how much longer I will have anything to clip it onto.  I've got a wig picked out that a lady at a wig store (who I always order my systems from) picked out for me because it is very similar to my current style.  I'm just waiting...hoping against hope that the loss will stop, and I will see regrowth.

I will never have the volume that I had years ago.  The dermatologist took biopsies and said the follicles have scarred over and regrowth isn't possible.  I'm just counting on the 'fact' that my loss since surgery will regrow sometime in the near future so that I can at least wear a hairpiece.  I wore wigs before I learned about hairpieces and I hated it!  My hairpiece (which is quality human hair and completely undetectable to everyone) is the only thing that saved what little self esteem I have.

(((Hugs)))  I know that mine gives me a TON more confidence... but it is embarrassing with dating and all... not the most fun to reveal about yourself... :-(

I haven't seen a dermatologist yet... my PCP says that everything still looks healthy, and we decided to give it 6 months and see what it does... if it's still falling out and I don't see any regrowth then I will see what they can do...

The girl at the hair replacement place says she doesn't see any regrowth, but that the follicles still look active... so there is hope!

VSG on 07/19/11 with
You have such a great attitude and are so brave to share  this part of your story!
I have lost tons of hair and use the "Great Hair Day" powder product on mine but it is getting harder and harder to cover some of the spots. I started loosing mine several years ago after a surgery and menopause did not help any. It was growing back a little bit when I had the VSG so I hope it will grow back again.
I hope the Dr.'s are able to find out the cause of your extreme hair loss. Keep your positive attitude!
You look great btw. Congrats on such a great weight loss!!!

Kanga, you might also be going to lose your eyelashes. But your "alopecia" diagnosis should cover the expense of using Latisse, which is horridly expensive. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the tip!  SO far it is ONLY my head that has any trouble... eye brows. eye lashes. everywhere else is still the same as it always was...  I'll hope my eyelashes stay put, but I guess time will tell.  I think that there are multiple forms of alopecia, so we will see...

me again....Im so sorry... YOU of all people! When it rains it pours huh! Can stress (cortisol) have  kicked it up a notch? ...ya get an A+ for tude  let me tell ya!

On the Latrisse it is VERY VERY effective for MPB (exact same way WE lose our hair! tops n sides worse)... Latrisse helps genetic component even!...it takes so much product for the scalp tho..maybe its ins. covered  I dunno.  Any other hair loss...legs, pits, pubes? I lost major in them depts.... eyelashes and eyebrows...some report losin it...I never did.

If yer docs are sayin yer follicals are good ....in next couplea months...start lookin for that regrowth! Like tiny little pubes stickin up all over.by 9 months out for me...all them sparse grand canyon  hairparts were all filled in

Easy on the wigs huh...think Navy guys, baseball cap wearin dudes...contribute to irreversible hair loss cuz...don't let their heads BREATHE....lmao...my uneducated theory of course ,-)

Ask the hair people/yer doc what do they think about Tesla treatments...get em at hair salons, cosmetology schools...cheap...may HELP!!   Like a fiber optic electrical RAKE...very cool neon tubing lookin thing...stimulates scalp...The Drs. television show said they were good for hair loss.

Also  have ya kept yer Omega 3's up?  lotsa studies on hair loss and omega3 supps. Most of them guys on MPB forums all supplement w/ omega3s not only finesteride.....fish or kril oil 3-5gs

Keep yer nutrition up there...IMULTI-VIT with IRON!!!,  protein ,lotsa Omega 3s...no need to supp on days you eat fish/seafood!

My hair COMPLETELY STOPPED shedding at 13 months POST OP when I STOPPED LOSING WEIGHT!  (course I found out about Omega 3s way after the fact!)  Im.  In  normal telogen effluvium since then...plus Im meno, plus IF my protein consistently sucks...my hair starts to shed again (prolly mental tho!). Its tuff bein a dame sometimes huh!

Keep rockin that sleeve K......  to yer little hair gods to get it together RIGHT QUICK!!!

Thanks for all of the advice :-)

One very cool thing about the wigs and systems that I have seen is that they are made of this "lace" type stuff... totally breathable... a  huge plus... I had no idea that there were such truly viable options out there!

I know that there are a lot of treatments, but I'm going with the least invasive/chemical for now... all conventional wisdom says that it WILL grow back, and while the doctors can't find any real reason it is SO bad, they all agree that other than continuing to do what I"m doing and stay on top of nutrients and all... 3 different doctors all agree that there isn't any treatment that I could start now that would make much of a difference, so I'm not "loosing" anything by taking a wait and see approach...

I'm planning to go with the wigs until I'm done loosing weight... give it 6 months and see what happens, then get more aggressive if need be...

It's funny... I haven't really noticed loss anywhere else at all... but I tend to keep stuff pretty bare, so maybe it has :-)

According to my dermatologist it's not alopecia, but you can get traction alopecia from the clips from a hairpiece, wearing hats, etc.  That is not an issue with a wig, because it surrounds the hairline and doesn't constantly rub on any specific area.

Fortunately I've been married for over 20 years so the dating isn't an issue for me.  I can't imagine having to deal with that too.  There is no known reason for my hair loss.  I've had all my hormone levels checked, and everything is normal.  There is no hair loss in my family...not even with the men.  I've had 2 different dermatologists tell me it is male pattern baldness.  I've tried Rogaine...per their suggestion, but it eats my scalp alive (what luck).  I'm on prenatal vitamins (per surgeon because of my hairloss).

As soon as I get home from work, etc I take my hair piece off.  Now that it's so thin, it almost hurts from the air in the room (if that makes sense).  I don't know how bald men do it.  I can pretend that I don't have a problem except when it comes time for vacations (Disney World, beach, swimming, etc) and then it's a real problem.  I've got 10 year old twin girls, and having sleepovers is difficult.  The last thing I need is a bunch of 10 year old girls knowing about it.  I teach middle school, so that's not a good scenario!

I hope your hair begins to regrow asap!  Good luck to you!

Just jumping in here.. Have you tried the Men's Rogaine Foam? The liquid causes me huge irritation, but the foam does not have the same effect, if I recall the culprit is the propylene glycol in the liquid.

I have thinning hair, and I have taken meds for it- Spironolactone, but I tapered off of that after a year and a half, did little to nothing but cause more issues. Rogaine Foam works the best, but it still takes a good 6-9mo to really see the diff, and lifetime use of course.. DISCLAIMER: I was on the foam pre-op for well over a year, it DOES NOTHING to stop the shed caused from fast weight loss.. I still went through it... cannot obviously say if I would have lost more.. but I clogged up the shower drain regularly while I was really losing.. I'm just using it to keep the hair I have. I have hair loss in my fam (incl the women.)

OMG... I can SO relate... I taught middle school for 7 years and am now on my 2nd year teaching high school in the same district... I SOOOO don't need my students to know!!!

My daughter is only 4, so not too worried yet, but my new boyfriends daughter is 12 and she figured it out and she is a talker... she's not in my district, but the neighboring one... I have told her that it is private information that I don't share, but she's 12... sigh.

It is embarassing dating for sure... I had one guy that when we were kissing was running his hands through my hair and actually broke the stiching on one of the clips... and he still had no idea that I had it on... lol... I don't know... all you can do is laugh I guess.  It's not like anyone would guess...  I definatly hate having to tell though... only told 2 guys so far... it has basically been a non issue... but then I've been lucky and only dated pretty nuce guys :-)

I haven't had a hair piece with the beach situation... I was told that I CAN wear it... but I don't know what my plan will be... I'm more worried abou****er parks, white water rafting, things like that.  I'm thinking that I'll cross that bridge when I get there, but I can see a really nice waterproof hat in my future... maybe???  Sigh.  Guess I'll have to see how the full system works out... but I do love the water....

(((hugs)))
