Newly sleeved, low blood sugar issues?

 Hello,

I have noticed several times over the past few days that I am getting super light headed, a little nausous, and in general feeling crappy.  If I drink a protein shake it goes away.  I started using soy milk at the snack time (4 ounces) and that also has really helped.  This morning though I woke up and went to use the bathroom, and I could barely stand it was so severe.  It was about 10 hours since I ate anyting.  I asked the hubby to get my the 4 ounces of soy milk and again I was ok after a bit.  I am concerned because had he not been there i am not sure if I could have made it down the stairs to get something.  Is this normal or a low blood sugar thing?

Back in September/October when I started the testing process for all of this I was labeled insulin resistent.  Previous to this occasionally it would happen if I went for long stretches without eating, but I rarely did that since you know my love of eating is what got me to this place!  Last week I had an endocrinologist appointment for the first time to check growth hormones (a cancer related appointment) and he said that I was diabetic, not even pre- diabetic.  Just trying to figure out if this is a sleeve issue or a blood sugar issue.  Thanks for reading this :)

I experienced that a lot in the beginning.  It was one of the main reasons I didn't go back to work for 3 weeks.  My doctor told me it's very important to keep your water intake up, especially in the morning.  It gets better as you get further out and your body adjusts to the huge drop in calories post op.

I also keep emergency snacks in my room and in my car.  Beef jerky and/or cheese crackers that can last a while.  I have a bottle of water and drink from it before I get out of bed, and that seems to keep the light headed feelings at bay.

Good luck and keep track of when this happens.  Bring it up with your doctor if it doesn't get better, and even if it does get better, be sure to mention it at your next appointment.

Happy.  I am type II diabetic.  I was sleeved on Oct 10 this year.  I went off my meds at surgery (actually off metformin a week before surgery).  For the first couple of weeks after surgery, my blood sugars were pretty low (although I didn't get low enough for a reaction).  The low sugars went away after I went back on real foods and I'm pretty normalized now.  I just had my A1C 3-month blood sugar test and was at 5.8 which is just under where I was before with the drugs.  I think if you are having these problems it would be good to talk to the doctor but for sure stay on top of your eating plan.  Try not to go so long without food if you can.

I've had trouble with low blood sugar pretty much my whole life. Since the surgery, I've found I have to be really careful with my eating to make sure it doesn't happen. I eat every 2-3 hours, regardless of hunger. Hunger has never been a reliable indicator for me. I also make sure that all of my meals have protein, especially if I'm allowing myself something sweet. Sugar without protein equals massive crash a few hours later. I also eat a small amount of protein before bed, which helps to keep my levels up until morning.

You also might want to get a meter and start testing before and after meals to get a handle on how you react to certain foods. Every body is different, and sometimes it takes a bit of time to find out what works best for you. If you can't get your sugars under control after a week or so then contact your doctor.

 Thank you both :)

I will be more careful with the duration between meals.  I have no issues getting the fluids in and protein targets, but have not been as diligent on the spacing of the carbs.  I also did not take a water bottle to bed so perhaps that is some of it too.  I will resume doing that.  I super appreciate your feedback!  Thank you, Patty

Call your doctor. He/She is in the best position to help you. Dizziness is not good and can be a symptom of many serious issues. I say, "Better safe than sorry"! Just my two cents.

The other thing you may look into is reactive hypoglycemia - I had this before surgery where if I eat something with too much carbs in it after an extreme high my blood sugar would drop like a rock. It is just something to think about - good luck.

 Hi Patty,

Sorry to hear that you're not feeling 100%.  I read through the other suggestions and maybe calling your doctor is the best thing. For the first three weeks my doctor has me on 72 grams of protein, 1/2 cup of strained cereal for breakfast and 1/4 cup strained cream soup for lunch and dinner.  In addition, I need to take in at least 64 oz. of water.  Therefore, throughout the day I feel full.  I too got off metformin two weeks prior to surgery and I have yet to have any lows.

Take care of yourself and please keep up posted as to how things turn out.
