I don't believe it either... I'm a very unreligious unbelieving type of person though... :)

I think we are placing our own cultural biases (and fears) on what the "end of a calender" means.

Personally, I don't believe any man knows, or will ever know, when our world will end.  I know most christians agree with this stance, as it happens to be biblical.   So whenever I heard someone, anyone, predicting a particular date, I almost take that as evidence against it happening on that day. LOL! ;)

So ... to answer you question in the title of this thread.   Yes, I think the Mayans had an accurate calendar that served it's purpose for them.  However, when you ask if they are accurate in their 2012 prediction, I know what you mean is "did they accurately predict the end of the world?" and to that I have to answer "No, because they weren't predicting the end of the world to begin with."

I'm no expert.  Just my own opinions based on what I've pieced together and concluded after reading a few articles and watching a few shows.

Nutshell:

Lost 140 lbs with VSG. (Hooray!!)

got pregnant  (yeaaaa!)

got cancer (boooo!)

regained 40 lbs.   (grrrr!)

In summary: Alive & Grateful.

I watched the Decoded on this subject. The show is Brad Metzgers Decoded. Very interesting. I am not 100% sure the world is going to end but I think that some of the predictions are already coming true.

Bottom line is that it isnt juts the Mayans. There is a Native American tribe called the Hopi from Northern Arizona which had the same conclusion. There are many others from around the world that have come to the fact that we are in fact in for something major around the same time.

Bottom line for me. It is a good reason to make sure my family is prepared for anything.

Many good documentaries (sp?) out there, many on Netflix. Keep your eye out on History, Discovery etc. channels this year and you will see some interesting information.

I just came back from the Yuccatan where my family and I visited the temple of Tulum, a Mayan epicenter of  culture.  An Angel told me that this was just a marketing ploy created by folks who want to make movies and to scare the general public out of their money (remember Y2K....I know I bought alot of water and stuff just in case).

Now before you dismiss my post as  I want to say that Angel was our tour guide who also happens to be Mexican and of Mayan descent.  He has dedicated his life to learning and passing on the fact that history in some places HAS IT WRONG about the Mayans.  The Mayan calendar was devised to RESET and was based upon the seasons and the rotation of the Earth around the sun.  It is all quite fascinating, and if you find the right source, it will open your eyes.

I am not worried in the least and plan on enjoying my new body for many years to come.

Thank for listening!

An Angel told you!  LOL! Love it!

My understanding is that the Mayans never ever predicted 2012 meant the end of the world.   That is definitely a modern interpretation.   It's the end of the 13th bak'tun (probably not spelling that right), or the end of  a 5000+ year calendar cycle.  So, yeah, it's a big deal.  Like the biggest New Year's EVAH!  But the Mayans referred to previous 13th bak'tuns as well as FUTURE 13th bak'tuns after the 2012 one.  They have prophecies written for thousands of years after 2012.  There just isn't any evidence that then Mayan thought 2012 was the end of the world.

I totally agree...  it's a fairly modern construct and it's getting played up to make $$.

Of course, I'll watch those apocalyptic movies.  Hey, I'm not made of stone.

This may seem like a gloom and doom post, which I don't mean it to be btw.

Every great civilization from the Mayans, Egyptians,Romans, etc etc has come to an end, so why should we be immune from that possibility? With that said, I do not think that *POOF* we are automatically going to be wiped off the face of the year.

I do think that there are somethings not in man's control....ie...weather, flooding, natural disasters and the diseases which often accompany them. We have lived selfishly for years, wasting our natural resources, outliving our usefulness for productivity. We act as if we are God, forgetting we are merely mortal man.

Very few people these days are prepared for the worst of the elements, just look what happened after Hurricane Katrina, or the Tsunami in Japan last year. Imagine if 'nature' decided to pull several Katrinas, major earthquakes,Tsunami's etc all within 24 hours worldwide. Civilization could easily change from what we have known to something out of a Mad Max movie overnight.

So, I do believe "we" will be here in Jan 2013, but will our existance be the same as today? Probably not. I hope for better, I prepare for the worst, and pray a lot!
