Allergic to avocados?

So, many moons ago I posted that avocados gave me dumping-like symptoms.  I try to avoid them, since the reaction I had to them was so severe.  Prior to surgery, I could eat avocado based products just fine.

This weekend, we went out for mexican.  I had chicken fajitas (I eat the chicken and veggies, and the leftovers feed me for days).  Without thinking (other than thinking, I have calories in my plan today for 1 teaspoon guacamole), I dipped a piece of chicken in the guacamole.  It had MAYBE 1/8 teaspoon of guacamole on it.  When my husband saw me, he asked "What are you doing! Why are you eating that!".  I had completely forgotten about my avocado reaction.

Within a half hour, I was in a lot of pain.  When I got home, my husband said "OMG, look at your eyes!"  They were completely red.  2 hours after the tiny amount of guacamole, I started feeling better.

Has anyone else had a reaction like this to food?  I've never had a food allergy like this.  Weird that it surfaced after the VSG...

I am part of a professional's group for food allergies.  Food allergies can appear and disappear at any time in our lives.  The classic example is when children have food allergies and then "outgrow" them as adults.  Generally this appearance and disappearance of food allergies in adulthood means that the reaction isn't severe, but is annoying and uncomfortable.

Yours sounds like another example of this.  So yes, it's possible you're now allergic to avacados.  Your body senses that it is being attacked so it elicits an immune system response to deal with it.  Each person's response is different and while yours isn't typical, it can happen. Best bet is to avoid avacados in the future.

On a side note, I ate a whole avacado this weekend (it was my lunch) and when I logged it, I about died from how many calories it was because of the fat content.  YIKES.

I am allergic to avocado.  There is actually a grouping of allergies that are all related, and I fall into this.  I am allergic to:

avocado
banana
kiwi
latex

These are all related, so if avocado bothers you heads up that some of these may also bother you.  The reaction sounds right.  If I eat it about 45 minutes later HORRIBLE cramping and projectile vomiting.  After about the 2 hour mark I start to go back to normal.  The cramping is as severe as child birth pain, no joke.  Kiwi makes the airway constrict on top of this.  There are more foods in this grouping, but I cannot remember them all now.  Here is some more reading on it

I suddenly became allergic to broccoli and pineapple in my late 20's and that's exactly what it feels/looks like for me.  It absolutely is as bad as child birth.  For the longest time the doctors thought it was a gallbladder attack.  Finally a very smart doctor told me to keep a food diary, and viola food allergies.  I feel for you, especially when it is something you love to eat.
