First things first, you sir are no adult.  Secondly, whatever you can do to get out of that chair and therefore outdoors do because you will go blind.

It sounds like you have an iPhone?  Are you not happy with it?  I'm very biased and don't think you can beat iPhone.  But since this is a VSG forum, I wanted to weigh in on the topic (lol).

One great think about iPhone that you won't find in most other phones is that you always get OS updates for free, without delay.  This means great new features. It's like getting a new phone every year, or whenever a new iOS is released.  The exception is some feature may be dependant on new hardware, like a video camera or in the case of Siri Assistant, a hardware noise reduction chip.  You still get the other feature, but obviously those that need the hardware support aren't there.  Likewise,  The very early model iPhones (2007 - 2008) don't have fast enough processors to support the latest iOS, so they only get the latest OS that will still run well on that phone.

Now, Android.. good luck on getting updates.  In theory android phones get updates, but reality is they rarely do.  With the speed of evolution on smartphones, it's really sad to get stuck in a two year commitment with a phone that is not going to stay current with new functionality being relased on newer Android phones.  Stop in a Verizon or AT&T store and ask which Android phones are not running the latest Android 4.0 OS.  This is not listed on specs, but is important.  You will find review after review stating Android 4 is the first Android release that comes close to the experience of Apple's iOS.

Next.  Battery life.  Before you go with an LTE phone, read some review. Specifically, search on Battery life. You will find if you want LTE, you are going to have to get an abnormally large phone.  This isn't because people want a gigantic phone, like marketing would like you to believe. But the larger form factor is to accomidate the larger LTE chip and a larger battery.  If the battery is big enough you will be less aware of the drain on the battery due to LTE.

Now for Windows Phone....  It's fairly new, but I would guess that updates to the OS would be regular.  And I would expect the update of the OS to be close to being as easy as that of iPhone.  The interface on Windows Phone is very different.  And if you are truely a luddite, you may actually enjoy Window phone, the best.  You may find it simple, fewer unneeded features, and therefore easier to get done what you want.   It's worth checking out.

I'm sorry but you have no clue about Android.

I've had no problems getting updates on my Android phone including 3 major updates in 18 months. (Eclair, FroYo & Gingerbread) You won't find many phones running 4.0 **** Cream Sandwich) yet as it was just released (Late December). There should be several phones running 4.0 released between now and the end of April. Most phones currently sold will be upgradable to 4.0. If you're interested in a specific phone a quick internet search will reveal if that phone will get Ice Cream Sandwich.

As far as LTE/4G, well Andriod phones give you several options wheras there isn't a single iPhone that will support data speeds above 3G.

Everyone has their own opinions and in the end picking a new phone is up to you.  I chose the Droid x when it came out for a few reasons.  1 - it had the best hardware for the time, 2 - I could root it and do some fun things with it (iphone users use the term jailbreak I believe).  Since Android is based on Linux, rooting just means you take over the main admin account (root) and have full control over the device.

Since I am a tech geek (comes from over a decade in IT as a tech and programmer) I have followed the new devices since I decided to get mine.  Here is my advice for what it is worth.

LTE - this is the equivilent of high speed vs DSL before DSL caught up.  Its nice if your going to use it often.  If you dont, you wont miss it.  It also drains a battery a little faster than 3g so find something with a good extended battery (higher numbers means longer life in the same device).

Operating System -

iPhones give you iOS which is purely controlled by Apple.  This is why OS updates roll out regularly, but you only get what Apple gives you.

Windows on windows phones, not positive but pretty sure this is the same method as Apple, you get what they give you and either you like it or you dont.

Android is different then the others in that it is open source.  That means that the cell phone makers can adjust things to fit their phones.  The person who posted before about asking for 4.0 **** cream Sandwich) was a little misleading in my opinion.  There is only 1 phone out right now that has it, and that phone is a good one.  That phone is made in partnership with Google and the updates come right from Google.  More phones will be coming out with this version as the cell makers are able to make their adjustments for their devices.  Once they have made their adjustments then they will even send out updates for older devices that have hardware that can support the new version.  Yes, there is a delay in versions thanks to the cell makers and the carriers making their adjustments but that also gives you some differences between devices.

All in all it comes down to what you like, and what control you want to have on your phone.  Apple and Microsoft both have the control to dictate what applications you have access to and those rules can adjust on the fly.  Recently Apple said they want a cut of all sales done via apps and almost lost some major companies because of it.  Android has a set market place controlled by Google, but Amazon also has an android marketplace (and give away a free app each day).  So you have more options and control.

I would currently highly recomend the Nexus phone if you like it, but unlike iPhones new devices come out every few months so if nothing out there fits you, just wait a little while and something new will be available.

All of you so knowledgeable people, thank you for taking the time, I feel i am so much better prepared (still a Luddite but better) to go and at least know what questions to ask.  The thing is when you buy a phone you're stuck with it for awhile so it is important to have some clue. Thank you all so much.

I've had two phones with android operating systems, a Samsung galaxy and an LG uhh I forgot but it's the newer android operating system. I like everything about the android system but the phone really dies fast. I have to have a car charger to survive if I use the phone regularly. Once I did that, my problems were solved. It's not so much the talking on the phone that kills it. It's using the apps.

I had an iPhone 3gs... my hubby had a droid X... there were certain things I liked about his and certain things I liked better on mine... I hafta say I am thrilled that I got the droid bionic!!! It has all the features that i liked from both! I absolutely love it!!!  I've had it 5 mos( seems much longer, lol) and my battery still lasts all day unless I'm on it literally constantly... it's extremely user friendly... if u want more details, feel free to hit me up :-)
