When will I ever learn?
Have a plan is the best advice and don'****ch TV while eating. Chew chew chew... When you are farther along you will not have to take 30 min to eat. but you will have to watch your portions. When I pack my food for the day. I put them in zip lock bags in the exact portion I need or in a glad-ware type container. I figure out what I am going to eat everyday. I always have a snack in my car and purse. One snack is about 3 or 4 bites each. That way I am rarely stuck with bad choices. Set yourself up for success... You will do great.. believe in yourself....

My lifestyle is quite hectic as well and requires a lot of "food on the go". I have learned my limits and if I get fast food, I simply take my portion of out the wrapper or the box and put the rest in the bag and close it. If you can't resist the temptation, then throw the rest of it away. I order a small sandwich off the dollar menu, throw away the top bun and make 2 meals out of the sandwich. Keep plasticware in your car to cut up your portions if necessary. I don't do the tenders as the breading it too heavy and makes me sick. My busy lifestyle was one of my biggest hesitations for this surgery, but I have managed(with quite a bit of planning as stated above) to keep good snacks with me and make the best choices possible. You will get the hang of it and it will get better.

First, sorry to hear your mom isn't doing well.
Second, What are foamies?? I've seen that word a lot. It sure sounds like something I don't want to experience. I too have a problem with eating very fast. I'm usually the first one finished. I hate that I eat so quickly. It's a very difficult habit to break. I so want to savor my food, instead of gulping it down and looking for more.

The foamies are when you eat too fast .. or maybe you eat something you shouldn't have .. or you get too full and overeat. I've gotten this several times and it always seems to be in relation to how quickly I ate. Well .. ok maybe it is WHAT i'm eating as well. Still trying to figure all this out ya know?
I get a pain in my chest / stomach area and it just doesn't feel right at all. Then my mouth starts watering like mad and thick saliva starts to form in my mouth. I feel like I have to burp but cant and like I am going to vomit. I have yet to actually throw up but hovering over the bathroom sink with copious amounts of phlegm and saliva pouring out of my mouth non stop for about 5 minutes before it passes. It does feel like foam is in your mouth so I guess that's why they call it the "foamies."
It's graphic I know but wanted to explain it well. You wont forget it once you have experienced it!

I never eat slow either but I've never experienced the foamies either... maybe once if that's what it was. It felt like a golf ball stuck in my throat but I think it was the food choice not the amount.
Being just a month out, if you are going to eat things that you aren't measuring, you should set aside a small amount that you "know" isn't going to be enough to get you to that point. Do you know how much 2 ounces is? Do you know what it looks like in various type of food? You should really take some time to learn this that way you can be able to kind of measure with your eyes. Once you can kind of guesstimate, you need to portion out LESS than that. For example, 4 chicken nuggets from mc donalds is 2 oz. I know this. If I were going to get chicken strips from Carls Jr, which is the same as Hardees (east coast, west coast), I would know that 1 1/2 MAYBE 2 if you get small ones is probably about 2 ounces. If I was eating it for the first time and in a rush and was a fast eater I would eat 1 and wait a bit, even if it's just 5ish minutes before I eat a half of another one, BUT I wouldn't eat more than a half of another one because I know, with my eyes, that that's more than 2 ounces. Does that make sense?
I know it's hard to carry around entire meals in our purses, but acbbrown makes a point in that we do need to be prepared. We need to have quick fixes with us. Protein shakes in the car, turkey jerkey, almonds, etc. in our purses. If you have the type of lifestyle where you "aren't" going to be able to "accomodate" the surgery then the surgery might not be accomodating to you. Use the search bar on her to find quick meal ideas. There are tons. You can make big meals at once and freeze them, portion things out at one time and have meals for a week, keep things in your purse, all kinds of stuff. You don't necessarily have to chew your food like crazy. Like I said, I never chew my food, but I've never had the foamies because I measured everything, learned the signs of being full and now I can see with my eyes when I'm unable to measure. At this point you really need to be practicing you VSG "skills" before you need to go to back to work so that you don't experience this 400 more times. You'll figure it out if you put in the effort.
