Resistant Starch?
I stayed very low carb during most of my losing phase. It was a) necessary for meeting my protein goal,a nd b) not that hard. When I got into a situation several months ago that my metabolism basically shut down due to Euthyroid Sick Syndrome (the body radically decreases active thyroid hormone when it's under extreme stress or illness), I immediately increased calories and carbs as well as starting a prescription iron supplement and having my Levoxyl dose cut by 1/3.
3 months later, at 1500 calories, 120g protein, and 80-90g of carb a day I am not only feeling better (great in fact) but I am losing weight at a pretty good clip despite a major decrease in T4 taken every day. It all sounds counterintuitive, I know, but stress your body enough and it will shut down your metabolism and not just in the 10% reduction or so seen related to 'starvation' response from a low calorie diet. I had a combination of exhaustion, 'starvation' (i.e., low calorie/low carb diet), a death in the family, and tonsilitis, and an active autoimmune disease.
My resting heart rate has stablized in the high 40's, my body temp is back up to about 97, and my BP has come up to the bottom range of 'normal'. I basically 'jump-started' my metabolism again by removing or mitigating the underlying stressors including the very low carb, low calorie diet I was on for more than a year.
I am atypical and I'm not suggesting that others run the same risk I do. My life is complicated -- I have 450 employees, a long-term incurable medical condition, etc.. The "program" of low-carb, low calorie dieting provides what appears the most consistent path to success with VSG. That doesnt mean it's the only path or to follow it blindly. You have to listen to your body. I knew I was more than tired and stressed out, and the fact that I went to the doctor when I did likely saved me from a much less favorable outcome.

Rule of thumb as Brandi says so eloquently-don't believe everything you read. There are some carbs that are better than others. Anything orange is good for you in moderation. Bananas maybe the cheesecake of fruits but theyre loaded with potassium. If you're cramping-they become a good carb. It's about YOUR BODY and YOUR journey. I'm a girly girl so here's my analogy-not all shoes are made for all girls. You have to pick and choose what's right for you. That doesn't mean you should buy them without trying them on.
Hey Dr. Singh friend =)
It's CLEAR that everyone reacts individually to carbs...I eat them and don't worry about counting how many, etc...I haven't stalled once and have lost almost 80 lbs!! I do exercise 5 days/week.
I ALWAYS concentrate on getting in my protein and water for the day FIRST and then (usually at the end of the day) I'll have some soy crisps or air popped popcorn as a snack around 8-9pm or so.
You find what works FOR YOU! If you start eating more carbs and then you stall then stop eating them I say. If I hit a stall I would absolutely stop eating my nightly popcorn/crisps and would increase my exercise, but that hasn't been the case for me yet.
Try to focus on what works for you and

oops got distracted by the kiddos and hit submit too soon=)
Try to focus on what works for you and it will all fall into place and become easier for you as time goes by.
Do you ever go to the support groups at St.Agnus on Mondays? I try to go at least once a month=)
Joyfully,
Maria
